Into the archives...

This striking aerial image of Newark Castle is attributed to John Kenneth St Joseph, an archaeologist and RAF veteran of the Second World War who helped transform how we understand historic landscapes.

St Joseph was a pioneer in the use of aerial photography for archaeological research. This photograph was likely taken in the 1950s, when he was curator of aerial photography at Cambridge University, working with the RAF who captured images for his research without charge.

It’s a fascinating piece of history from a more modern perspective.
