Now is the time to sew seed for hardy biannuals which will flower next year such as cornflowers, larkspur, nigella, calendula and honesty.
These can be planted out in the gaps in spring or replaced after flowering by the tender plants like dahlias and verbena.
The other winter hardy annual to be sown now are sweet peas but they are vulnerable to wet cold so are best down as pot grown and kept in an open cold frame which is only fully closed in very cold or very wet weather.

Tip of the Week:
After all the recent rain make sure your pots and containers aren’t standing in water and are free draining. Most plants won’t tolerate standing in sodden soil. Slightly raise one side of the pot or container with a stone to aid free drainage. Empty any saucers or pot holders that are full of water.

Tip of the Week:
Now that plants like foxgloves, honesty and aquilegia have finished flowering leave the spent flower spikes on the plant until they turn brown then pick and put upside down in a paper bag or envelope until the seeds drop out. Keep in a dry place to sow when ready. Foxgloves are biannual so sow those seeds in a bare patch now that the soil is cool and damp.
