We are volunteers interested in maintaining local Public Rights of Way. We are always on the look out for extra pairs of hands!

OUR NEXT WALK is around part of COLEORTON including Farm Town, Church Town and Gelsmoor.
Date: Thursday 24th September 2026.
Start: 10 am.
Meet at: New Lount Nature Reserve Car Park (free but no toilets)

Small donation for insurance/materials to repair the PRoW local network.
About 5.5 to 6 miles. Easy walking but some paths slightly overgrown.

This is the walk we had to cancel in June. Hopefully it won't be too hot this time!

Our brilliant map board of local paths and footpath history, located on Castle Street, has been moved by Cameron Homes and is being stored in their yard on Church St (see photo).

The planning permission for this site had stated the our board and the Town Map, originally the work of Melbourne Civic Society, would be moved along Castle St closer to the back of Pump House but it has now been agreed that both boards will be installed on Church St close to the 1940 bombing memorial plaque and benches.

We hope that both boards will be in place by late September.

We have been down to the stile on Main Street King's Newton (Melbourne FP4) again to add another support post. We think this should now last a couple of years.

Ideally it should be replaced with a gate because it is a popular path and we know that folk with restricted mobility really struggle with stiles. We have offered to pay for a high quality gate and have it installed professionally.

We have been out and about recently cutting back overgrowth around FP signs. Let us know if others need revealing locally. These are at Woodhouses and on Derby Road.

When working north of Riding Bank (near the top of Robinson's Hill, Melbourne) we cleaned up the information panel about the history of the nearby farm and the permaculture planting (well worth a read) on the site.

It is tragic to see so many of these boards elsewhere in the National Forest discarded when the contract has expired.

One of our crack team clearing bridleway 19 near Riding Bank (near the top of Robinson's Hill), Melbourne today.

We were alerted to the fact yesterday that Melbourne Hall has built across the legal line of public footpath (Melbourne FP13) at Crow Park for the "Live at Melbourne" event this weekend. Obstructing a public right of way is an offence in law against the Highways Act 1980 s137 punishable by fines and even imprisonment. Of course, it's too late to move the Heras fencing now but if they use that field again they should mark out the path to avoid it or apply for Temporary Traffic Regulation Order from the County Council as the Download organisers do.

Of course access to the public footpath, taking into consideration the temporary illegal diversion, must be available 24/7 i.e. all over the festival weekend.

Our next walk is on Thursday 23rd July, starts at Ticknall Village Hall car park (DE73 7JX) and takes us by Robin Wood.

We leave at 10:00 as usual and ask for a small donation.

The walk is about 5 miles and shouldn't be too strenuous though that depends on the weather. If the temperature is due to reach 30C on the day we will postpone the walk. Please check this page before setting out.

Please try to share cars or use public transport to the start.
