🩷 Volunteer Story – Meet Lynne 💙

What inspires someone to give their time every week for more than a decade?

For Lynne, it all started 12 years ago when she attended a presentation about me&dee.

"I first met Maria at a networking event and, a few weeks later, attended a presentation she gave about me&dee. It was truly eye-opening. Hearing about what families are facing every single day, and listening to Maria speak so passionately, really stayed with me.

When she explained that me&dee were looking for volunteers, I knew I wanted to get involved. I had a chat with her afterwards and offered to help – and I've never looked back.

Since then, I have volunteered on average one day a week and I absolutely love it. Being part of something that helps families create precious memories during the most difficult times of their lives is incredibly special."

💗 Volunteers like Lynne are at the heart of me&dee. Their kindness, commitment and generosity help us support families facing life-changing and limiting circumstances, giving them opportunities to create memories that will be treasured forever.

For our families, volunteers are often the friendly faces, helping hands and caring hearts that make all the difference when they need support the most.

Breakfast Club at Hickory's Smokehouse Derby

There’s something really special about bringing families together in a relaxed and welcoming environment, and our recent breakfast morning at Hickory’s was exactly that.

Over breakfast, families had the chance to chat, connect, and enjoy some time together. From sharing stories over a coffee to seeing new friendships form, it was a morning full of smiles and meaningful moments.

At me&dee, peer support is at the heart of what we do. Creating opportunities for families to meet others who truly understand their experiences can make such a difference, helping to build confidence, friendships, and a sense of community.

Hope carries a heavy load.

She is a memory keeper, with a special recorder in her ear, created to capture the sounds families never want to lose: precious words, tiny heartbeats, laughter, songs, and the voices of children facing short and uncertain lives.

Through Hope, families can hold on to more than photographs. They can hear again. They can remember the giggle, the breath, the little voice saying “I love you.”

But even memory keepers need comfort.

Sometimes, after giving so much comfort to others, Hope needs a gentle hug from her best friend, Oona fairy. A soft reminder that she is not carrying it all alone.

What a fantastic evening at our me&dee quiz!

It was wonderful to welcome so many new faces alongside our loyal returning teams, making the evening even more special.

🏆 Congratulations to our winning team, Randy Flab Star, who stormed to victory with an impressive 120 points! 🏆

We're delighted to be supported by Cancer Candy , a new handmade craft business by Sandra who is a close friend to a family that we support!

After overcoming her own cancer journey, Sandra has returned to crafting and will be donating 50% of all Cancer Candy sales to me&dee, helping us continue supporting families facing life-shortening and terminal diagnoses through our continuing care programme.

On Friday evening, a group of me&dee families enjoyed a wonderful trip to Derby Theatre to see Little Shop of Horrors.

For many of the families we support, opportunities to enjoy experiences like a night at the theatre simply aren't possible. Being able to step away from appointments, treatments and everyday worries, even for a few hours, can make a world of difference.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible team at Derby Theatre for so generously donating the tickets.

A special thank you also goes to Tracy for arranging a fascinating backstage tour. Having the opportunity to go behind the scenes added an extra layer of magic to the evening and made the experience even more memorable for everyone who attended 🩷💙

As Volunteers’ Week 2026 comes to a close, we want to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU to every single one of our incredible volunteers 🩷💙

Your time, dedication, compassion and support make such a difference to the families we serve.

This year feels especially special as we celebrate receiving The King's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a charity can receive in the UK. This recognition belongs to all of our volunteers, past and present, whose commitment has helped shape me&dee into the charity it is today.

We are also incredibly proud to have a volunteer CEO Maria, whose passion, leadership and dedication embody the very spirit of volunteering that runs throughout our charity.
