This is the New Zealand Flax in flower, and it is loved by bees. It might not be a native plant but you'll find it in our forest garden as it's really useful - you can make string from it.
To make the string you strip the tough outer leaf to isolate the fine inner fibers. Then, you twist these fibers together into a durable cord.

We're getting prepped today for some summer site hires. We have only cut the grass in the areas needed for events, so we're leaving as much long grass as possible for our wildlife. When you come on site you'll notice lots of interesting grasses and wildflowers have popped up like the oxeye daisies. Have a look on our website for hire information and costs, or send us a message.

If you'd like to try out volunteering and have some fun keep an eye on our social media for session details, our next session is on this Saturday 6th June, 1-4pm and we're making insect habitats.

Volunteering is all about bugs this week. If you were a Lesser Stag Beetle, living at Whistlewood, where would you want to live? The answer is a Stag Beetle log tower, seen as the height of luxury! We will be building one this weekend at our volunteering session on Saturday 6th June 1-4pm. We also have an insect hotel to refurbish. Come and join in the fun.
