St Wilfrid’s Barrow

St Wilfrid’s Barrow St. Wilfrid’s is a beautiful medieval building on Church Lane and, at one time, was an outpost for the Knights Hospitallers of St John.

Wilfrid’s is a beautiful medieval building on Church Lane, overlooking the Trent valley. The Church, at one time, was an outpost for the Knights Hospitallers of St John, and has many interesting features, old and new. The Knights Hospitallers, who were given our Church and surrounding land in 1165, were a change-making presence in our small village. These Knights played a major role in the crusade

s, had great political influence throughout European history, had large estates across the continent, and at one time were the largest landowners in England. Research shows only two British churches developed by the Hospitallers remain structurally unchanged since the Order was dissolved in 1540; our Church is one of these. We want to preserve and celebrate this important heritage site, transforming it into a multi-function building fit for research, education and community use, with the ability to sustain itself. We possess a rare and wonderful piece of Hospitaller property. Preserving it, and investigating its influence internationally and locally, will provide a central point for scholars and an educational resource on mediaeval England in what has been a hidden history.

Join us on Friday 17 July at 7:30pm for a gripping evening as Gareth Williams explores the life of Eirik Bloodaxe -warrior king, ruler of Norway and England, and a figure shrouded in myth and mystery.

Drawing on years of research, Gareth (former British Museum curator and Viking expert) brings a vivid and realistic portrait of Eirik, the brutal power struggles of the 10th century, and the influence of the formidable Queen Gunnhild.

Join us on Friday 15 May at 7:30pm for a powerful evening with Lesley Smith, bringing to life the remarkable story of Peggy Knight, a young woman who went from shorthand typist in North London to parachuting into Nazi-occupied France as part of the SOE.

With just two weeks’ training and one practice jump, Peggy showed unimaginable courage, even cycling straight through enemy lines.

Her story is rarely told - but it won’t be forgotten.

Tickets: £15 (includes a glass of prosecco and a luxury chocolate)

Sadly we have had to cancel the summer film nights we had planned for this year. This is as a result of equipment issues.

We shall, of course, let you know when we can recommence.

Again, our apologies.
