We welcome the Prime Minister’s recent announcement that all rough sleepers in England will be offered a route off the streets by Christmas. As an organisation that has worked in Greater Manchester for more than twenty years supporting people experiencing homelessness after claiming asylum, we continually see the long-term physical and mental harm caused by destitution and homelessness.

But we also see the slow violence that the asylum and immigration system inflicts over decades of people's lives, with destitution and homelessness as inevitable consequences of Home Office policy. We recognise the Prime Minister's genuine desire to see an end to homelessness, but if he is serious about ending it for all people, then there must be an end to the siloed decision making that sees practical support to alleviate homelessness offered with the right hand, but the underlying drivers of homelessness perpetuated with the left. In short, we must see a change in policy direction from the Home Office.

If this really is for everyone, any attempt to end homelessness must also include people who are ordinarily excluded from mainstream support because of their immigration status. You can read more about how we've seen this work in Greater Manchester below ⬇️

Through our work, we see a system that is harming people seeking safety and the communities in which they live. People who have often experienced terrible trauma are forced to live in military bases and squalid hotels. And in the worst cases, they have been left at the mercy of violent, racist individuals who have harassed, beaten and abused them.

The profiteering contractors and the Home Office who run this system have shown little consideration for the people they accommodate or the towns in which they operate.

This is why, alongside 50 other organisations, Boaz has signed an open letter to Andy Burnham calling for the new Prime Minister to use his political principles to overhaul how people seeking asylum are accommodated.
