Manchester South Central Food Bank hosted by Bridging the Gap

We aim to work with and to support our local community. When we are able to we provide refreshments for community groups meetings.

Manchester South Central Foodbank is delivered by a local charity 'Bridging the Gap' providing a foodbank service to people living in Hulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range and Old Trafford. We work with local agencies to support families/individuals who for various reasons cannot access our foodbank; we will provide emergency food parcels with agency support outside of our distribution sessions. Currently we do this by supporting primary school breakfast clubs, groups who cook for street homeless people & agencies who work with asylum seekers.

The amazing community Trinity High collected over 950kg of food and toiletries🫶

What a pleasure to welcome such a brilliant bunch from 🫶

They smashed our Supermarket Sweep Challenge bringing in a massive 232.65kg of food, providing the equivalent of over 550 meals for our families facing hunger and hardship.

No child should have to face hunger. Yet, in our constituency of Rusholme 51% of children are living in poverty (highest in Manchester). The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has brought unimaginable hardship to our families. These statistics represent more than just numbers. They tell the stories of families forced to make impossible choices.

This half term we are supporting 130 families with a holiday hunger parcel which will help reduce the financial stress of the school holiday.

Huge thanks to this awesome group from Latham & Watkins for taking on our Supermarket Sweep Challenge.

The two teams battled it out and after a lot of teamwork and a pinch of competition brought back over 282kg of food - equivalent to over 670 meals🫶

We support over 450 individuals a month and events like this make all the difference.

Our foodbank hubs are places of hope and community — offering not just emergency food but a warm welcome – connection over a cup of tea, compassion, and advice that helps prevent future crises.

Despite significant efforts to support people into financial stability, demand for emergency food remains appallingly high - 148% higher compared to 2019.
Donations are 7% lower than the previous year, meaning we are spending more than ever purchasing food to meet rising needs.

Through our unique partnership with Citizens Advice Manchester and Manchester Mind , we provide free, specialist advice and support directly within our foodbank settings. Addressing the root causes of financial hardship, helping people move from crisis towards stability, resilience and independence.

Together, this partnership can ensure that Manchester residents are not only fed today, but supported to thrive tomorrow.

When housing support doesn’t cover the rent, people are often left with an impossible decision: pay the landlord or buy food.

Nobody should have to decide between keeping a roof over their head and putting food on the table.

Yet new research from Russell Terry shows that the majority (58%) of private renters who receive housing support have gone without essentials in the past 6 months. And our food bank sees first-hand how unaffordable housing is driving hardship.
