One of those moments that solidified my decision to get even more involved in Trade Unionism was 3 years ago when I attended the 155th Annual Trades Union Congress in Liverpool as a proud RMT delegate. It’s been full time ever since.

Academic study to find better ways to support rail workers with low back pain.

Dear colleague

I have been approached by researchers from Cardiff University and the University of Southampton, who are running a study to find better ways to support rail workers with low back pain.

They are looking for rail workers who have experienced low back pain and would like to help them make sure the study is useful and easy to understand.

They have asked whether I would be willing to share the attached flyer with rail workers who may be interested. Anyone interested would volunteer in their own time and contact the research team directly using the information in the flyer.

Volunteers would join a small Public Advisory Group (PAG). They will not be study participants and the researchers would not test anything on them, but rather simply ask for their opinions and ideas based on their experience of working in rail and having low back pain. No technical or research expertise is needed.

There will be up to five meetings between September/October 2026 and April 2028. Each meeting will last up to two hours, and people do not have to attend every meeting.

At the meetings we will ask simple questions such as:

Does the information we give rail workers make sense?
Is there anything that could make it hard for people to take part?
Are our questions clear and easy to understand?
Do the findings match people's real-life experiences?
What is the best way to share the results with rail workers?
To thank volunteers for their time, they will receive an £80 shopping voucher for each meeting they attend. This covers the meeting and any small amount of preparation needed beforehand. The researchers will help them complete a short form and the voucher will be emailed directly to them.

Meetings will usually be online. If any are held in person, the researchers will cover reasonable travel costs.
