RMT calls for ‘root and branch’ review following more power outages

RAIL union RMT called for a root and branch review of railway operational control centres following another outage forcing most CrossCountry train services to be cancelled.

The power outage in Birmingham affected its control centre, resulting in many of the systems used to manage the railway being unavailable.

Private operator Arriva runs Cross Country services which have yet to be taken in-house under plans for Great British Railways (GBR).

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that passengers and rail workers should not have to bear the brunt of another week of travel chaos due to insufficient back-up systems.
“We clearly need a full root and branch review of critical areas of railway operational control centres to ensure they remain unaffected by power outages,” he said.

Further strike action called on East Midlands Railway

RMT members working at East Midlands Railway (EMR) will take further 48-hour strike action starting from Sunday August 30 over ongoing safety concerns and major train faults.

Ongoing action short of strike remains on in which members are instructed to refuse to work a Class 810 trains if a list of faults including lack of air-con, door faults and non-working toilets continue.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the union would ensure representatives will be permanently involved in discussions with both EMR and Hitachi to try to improve the situation with the 810 units.

“RMT is demanding that whilst these faults exist and until these trains are shown to be operating properly, they should be taken out of service.

“It is now time for EMR management to act on the safety concerns of our members,” he said.

24-hour strike action is also planned for September 16 if there are no improvements in safety and operations. Full strike dates are below:

00:01 hours on Sunday 30th August 2026 and 23:59 hours on Monday 31st August 2026
12:00 hours on Wednesday 16th September 2026 and 11:59 hours on Thursday 17th September 2026

🚨 Pay win at Stena Line

Seafarers’ union RMT has secured another pay win for seafarers at Stena Line which represent uplifts of up to nearly 25 per cent in addition to the annual pay increase for 2026.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey applauded RMT maritime officials for engaging with Stena regarding retention of skills in the short term and its longer-term vision for UK ratings, job security, and opportunities for career development.

“I would like to thank RMT national secretary Darren Procter, our shipboard representatives and Stena convenor Michael Hobson for all their hard work on behalf of the members.

“In contrast to rogue employers like P&O Ferries, Stena Line has publicly supported good quality employment of UK seafarers, whilst recognising that in order to attract the best people and retain the experience and loyalty of its people it has to compete with the pay scales of other employers which had fallen in decline,” he said.

The Stena Line wage increases across grades working within the Deck and Technical department include uplifts for the following grades:

Bosun – 24 per cent
Assistant Bosun – 20 per cent
AB – 17 per cent
Hotel Repairman – 20 per cent
Engine watch ratings between 8 and 17 per cent.

P&O pension debt victory

Seafarers union RMT today marked a significant victory for seafarers' pensions after P&O Ferries paid over £90 million it owed to the Merchant Navy Ratings Pension Fund (MNRPF).

The payment follows negotiations between the MNRPF Trustees and DP World and means the £94 million debt has now been paid in full, with the funds invested alongside other scheme assets.

It also removes the charges held over P&O Ferries' vessels, which had been put in place as security against any default on the company's obligations.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the victory came after RMT campaigned vigorously for justice for the 786 seafarers sacked by P&O Ferries and that they pay what it owed to the MNRPF.

“While this is good news for MNRPF members, it is also good news for other MNRPF participating employers who would have been left with P&O Ferries’ debt had it gone into administration.

“RMT would like to congratulate the MNRPF Trustees on successfully negotiating this payment, but we would like to make it clear that the campaign for justice for the 786 seafarers ruthlessly sacked by P&O Ferries continues,” he said.

No to gate line reductions on Northern Trains

RAIL union RMT has called on the government to instruct Northern Trains to cease trials that reduce gate line operations.

The union understands that Northern Trains has instructed Carlisle Support Services (CSS) to hold trials that reduce the operation of gate lines on the Northern contract at many locations including St Helens Central, Blackburn, Harrogate, Skipton, Rochdale and Wigan Wallgate.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey stated that only last month the government rail minister had announced investment in physical gate lines across the country to prevent fare evasion which was losing the taxpayer millions in lost revenue.

“Open gates and no checks will not only lead to more fare avoidance but increase anti-social behaviour as the gate lines often act as a physical barrier.

“We will be writing to the rail minister Lord Peter Hendy to point out that Northern Trains plans flatly contradict what the government is trying to do,” he said.

Blue plaque for Asquith Xavier

English Heritage has installed a blue plaque at the former Notting Hill home of Asquith Xavier (1920–1980), the railway worker whose determination to challenge racial discrimination helped bring an end to an unofficial ‘colour bar’ at London’s Euston Station.

The plaque marks where Xavier lived in 1966 when he stood up against discriminatory practices preventing him from transferring to a role as a train guard at Euston.
He was supported by his union representative, Jim Prendergast of the National Union of Railwayman (NUR) – predecessor to RMT – and with the case receiving national attention, his campaign exposed the existence of the colour bar.
