UNISON welcomes the Government’s decision to end the Tory Police Uplift regime. This required police forces to maintain police officer numbers regardless of whether chief constables wanted or needed them. It took officers off the street to do police staff jobs at twice the cost to the public purse. UNISON campaigned against the Uplift since it was introduced in 2019. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is to replace the grant with ringfenced funding for neighbourhood officers.
