The Society of Authors welcomes four new members to its Management Committee (board) this November.

SoA members Kester Brewin, Lexie Elliott, Stella Oni and Stewart Hotston will join the board to support the organisation in our mission.

The new board members will begin their terms following the SoA’s AGM in November 2026.

Welcoming the new Management Committee Members, Chair of the Management Committee, Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin, said:

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming our new board members who, between them, bring a wealth of experience from a wide variety of areas. The next few years are crucial for our work at the SoA as we keep-up our pressure for authors’ rights under our new brand. Our four new members are talented, passionate, and hugely qualified for the task of advocating for the author community – we can’t wait for them to start.”

As there were four nominees and four available places, no election was required this year.

SCAM ALERT

Our digital postbag has been full this week of authors receiving scam emails, either reporting to be from the SoA, or other organisations promising marketing, festivals and much more.

To try to minimise the risk, we're advising everyone to remove email addresses from public websites, including your own and the SoA member directory. Instead, people who want to get in touch can use the Contact Form option. We will pass on any enquiries received directly to the secure details we hold for you.

We will never send you emails from gmail accounts or any other email that does not have an official societyofauthors.org domain name.

Finally, if an offer looks too good to be true, contact our advisory team who will be happy to reassure you or tell you to steer well clear.

You can find more information in our 'How to protect against scammers: a guide for authors' in the resources section of our website.

Share with your network so that we can all be aware.

Let's be careful out there.

You did it!

10,000 of you have signed the petition calling on Government to protect creators from the existential threat of GenAI. This means the Government will be required to respond.

Next target is 100,000 signatures, when it will be considered for a debate in Parliament.

Fairness and transparency must be at the heart of the UK's approach to AI.

Help our mission by signing and sharing link in bio.

And thanks to the dream team

The Go-Between by L. P. Hartley is one of the most loved works among the estates managed by the SoA.

In October 2023, playwright Ben Musgrave approached us about acquiring the rights for a stage adaptation.

With the new adaptation about to tour East Anglia with Eastern Angles Theatre Productions, we caught up with Ben and director Jake Smith to learn more about the journey from securing rights to reaching the stage.

You can read the full interview in our latest news post.

You can find out more about acquiring rights to the literary estates we manage on our website.

Did you know we administer a number of grants for authors? Grants currently open for applications include:

🖊️Authors' Foundation grants for works-in-progress
📜Strachey Trust Grants to enable authors to access literary manuscripts in a UK or Republic of Ireland archive

Details of all the funding available can be found on our website and, as Sam Byers very kindly shared, we aim to make the process of applying as simple and straightforward as possible.

If you feel able, you can support authors by making a donation. A contribution to our Access Fund will help us ensure that travel, subsistence, childcare costs and access needs aren’t barriers to authors taking part in events, residencies and retreats. Or contact our grants team directly to discuss other ways to donate.
