On behalf of Leicestershire Police UNISON Branch, our reps and members send our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the officers who have tragically lost their lives while serving the communities of Cleveland.

Our thoughts are also with everyone across the emergency services who has had to deal with the devastation and aftermath of this harrowing incident — those who attended the scene and the Police Staff working behind the scenes who will also have been involved in the response.

We send our support and solidarity to our colleagues in Cleveland Police UNISON Branch, its officers, reps and members at this incredibly difficult time.

A very sad time for the entire policing family.

On this day 81 years ago Victory in Japan day was commemorated, effectively ending the Second World War.

Europe had celebrated months earlier, while British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces in the Far East continued the fight, suffering terrible losses. After almost six years of the most destructive war in history, peace could at last be celebrated, and preparations made to return home, with Allied prisoners of war liberated and repatriated after their appalling experiences.

Join us in remembering the service and sacrifice of all involved in the Far East, without whom the freedoms we enjoy today would not have been possible.

We will remember them.

We fully support this campaign, killing public service workers should be a minimum life sentence.

Our Chief Constable, David Sandall, is one of 50 senior police leaders from across the UK, who has signed an open letter to the Prime Minister calling on him to stop the potential early release of those responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper.

PC Harper, from Thames Valley Police, was killed in the most appalling circumstances in 2019 whilst trying to stop the theft of a quad bike. The possibility of an earlier-than-expected release of two of the three people responsible for his death has caused deep concern among the public and across policing. The letter, which also has the support of Leicestershire Police Federation, also calls for the introduction of stronger protections for victims and communities when release arrangements change. Mr Sandall has also signed the Thames Valley Police Federation petition opposing the early release of Andrew Harper’s killers, which has now received more than 900,000 signatures.
