Pillar to Post is back. Issue 2 of our magazine is out now 📰

This anniversary edition marks ten years of 3Pillars. But as we enter a decade of work, this issue isn’t just about looking back - it’s about what happens Beyond the Pitch.

Inside, you won’t just read about rugby; you will hear directly from men who are taking the discipline and teamwork learned on the pitch and applying it to their resettlement, employment, and families post-release. From poetry written in custody to updates on our graduates building careers as community leaders, this edition is full of real, unpolished stories of people finding their voices and proving they are Fit for the Future.

Swipe through for a preview of the 3PP Awards, insights from our ambassadors, and a letter from our trustee.

This is Week 2 of our 3Pillars Rugby Academy curriculum - a standard part of the structured programme we deliver repeatedly across custody settings. This week, the focus is on what it takes to play as one.

On the pitch, the men are mastering two technical skills that move a team forward: evasion - reading the defense to find a gap - and ball presentation - placing the ball cleanly to support the next runner. Off the pitch, the focus is on collective identity. Each team works together to design its own badge, slogan, and chant, actively turning a group of individuals into a cohesive side.

To connect the physical skills to a broader mindset, we introduce historical context, exploring how a shared goal and a positive team culture united a divided nation during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Prison is an artificial and often isolating environment. By repeatedly delivering this structured curriculum, we use rugby as a gateway to build an inclusive team culture. On the pitch, men challenge themselves, take personal responsibility, and build accountability. When you belong to a team, there is a powerful urge to fit in with a positive culture - and that is where change begins.

Eight weeks. One team. The will to succeed.

On 29 April, 48 men at HMP Oakwood took to the pitch alongside 12 community volunteers for a day of touch rugby.

It began with a mass game of rock, paper, scissors - a whole crowd cheering together. It ended with handshakes, certificates, and a group of people holding each other to the same high standards as team-mates.

One Rugby Academy graduate hadn’t held a rugby ball in 14 years since fracturing his skull. Today, he took the field again, put his team first, and won the Ethos Award.

In the words of one participant: “It feels like I’m not in a prison.”

While stepping away from the prison reality for a day is a powerful relief, its true value goes much deeper. Breaking the artificial environment of custody allows participants to temporarily shed the survival persona of a prisoner and try on a new identity as a rugby player and teammate. This shift in mindset is often the vital catalyst that empowers men to start making different decisions, taking responsibility, and committing to long-lasting behaviour change.

As one volunteer noted: “I almost forgot where I was.”

We use rugby as a gateway to build trust-based relationships and challenge the custody environment. By bringing people together on the pitch, we create a positive team culture that shapes character, models self-discipline, and helps men build a different future beyond prison.
