Week four, and the last of our Just Economics report: community partners.

We've spent a month on what a break does for carers, what it saves the state, and what it costs hotels. And so many unpaid carers were helped by caring organisations who made the referral.

The research measured their side too: 10.5 hours a month saved, 91% saying we've increased access to breaks in their area, and a 9.25 out of 10 rating. Carers Oxfordshire have referred over 900 carers since 2022. One hadn't had a break in eight years.

It's week three of our Just Economics report recap! This time, we're focussing on our wonderful hotel partners. None of this works without them.

What's the most sustainable thing a hotel can do without adding anything new? Stop wasting what already exists.

There are one million empty hotel rooms in the UK every week. Lit. Heated. Cleaned. Insured. And empty. We partner with hotels to donate those rooms to full-time unpaid carers: the millions of people who are the backbone of British social care. The independent research now shows what happens next: 77% of carers said their break helped prevent a crisis. And the cost to the hotel? On average, they come out ahead by £23.68 per break, once in-hotel spending and word-of-mouth bookings are counted.

We don't need a new app or framework or green certification. We need hotels to donate 1% of those empty rooms, and every full-time carer in the UK could have access to a break.

The most sustainable hotel room in the UK tonight isn't the one with bamboo toothbrushes or reusable cups. It's the room a carer is sleeping in.

Hospitality & Catering News has shone a light on our partnership with The QHotels Collection this week, and it's a piece we're really proud of.

It traces what's grown since 2022, how their donations of vacant rooms turned into more than 6,200 breaks for full-time unpaid carers. More than a third of those stays have happened in the last year alone, which tells you something about the team's commitment.

Best of all, the article gives the space to the people it's actually about.

Trish, who stayed at Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, hadn't had a holiday in 21 years. On call day and night, for two decades, looking after someone she loves. She said the break meant the world to her — and reading that, it's hard not to feel the weight of everything that came before it.

Joanna arrived at Forest Pines feeling completely overwhelmed, struggling to care for her son and not caring for herself at all. One night away gave her the space to breathe.
