Last month Kingston Ramblers were joined by volunteers from Ramblers partner Lateral UK to help clear invasive Himalayan Balsam from along the Hogsmill River.

Himalayan Balsam is fast growing and can block paths, and it also undermines river banks, causing paths to collapse into the water. Volunteers from Kingston Ramblers have been working in partnership with other local conservation organisations to help remove it before damage is done.

Lateral offer modern health insurance for active over 60s, and this year they are supporting the Ramblers with funding to help our path improvement projects across Britain. Thank you to the Lateral team who joined our volunteers in Kingston, and for all your support this year.

The Ramblers have secured another victory in the long-running legal battle over public paths through Hayton Woods, Cumbria, after the Supreme Court refused Roxlena Ltd permission to appeal. ✊ 🥾

Sophie Redmond, Paths Manager at The Ramblers, said:

"We’re delighted that the Supreme Court has brought this case to an end, vindicating the efforts of everyone who has worked tirelessly to reopen these paths for the public. This is a victory not only for Hayton Woods, but for everyone who values the right to access nature.

“While fences and 'no right of way' signs remain in Hayton Woods for now, we hope local people and visitors will soon be able to once again enjoy these beautiful woodland paths."

As the new UK Government takes shape, our England Director Jack delves into what practical steps they should take to ensure that everyone is able to access nature and the outdoors, regardless of where they live across England:

🌳 Expand access to woodlands, 75% of which is currently out of bounds in England
🥾 Set up a network of nature-rich urban routes, connecting people in cities to green and blue space
❌ Remove unnecessary barriers on the path network, which prevent 1 in 4 people from using it

Because access to nature isn't a luxury. It's a right. And together, we need to fight for it.

That's why we're proud to be partnering with Mayor of London to improve walking access to London's rivers over the next decade.

The Clean Rivers and Waterways Plan aims to:
🌊 increase publicly accessible waterside paths in areas which currently have the least access;
🛠️ improve the quality and condition of existing paths;
🔓 improve connection to the existing walking network.

Access to nature isn't a luxury; it's a right. That's why we are campaigning for governments across the UK to expand and protect the path network, so that it serves every community.
