This week we celebrate the end of two fantastic Young Carer maths programmes delivered in partnership with Barnet Carers Centre and Harrow Carers 🎉

A huge well done to all of the young people who took part while balancing caring responsibilities alongside school and everyday life.

Both programmes were supported by our brilliant student mentors, whose encouragement, patience and positivity helped create welcoming spaces where students could build confidence in maths and in themselves.

It was wonderful to hear from Harrow Young Carers about the students’ “consistency, resilience and willingness to attend each week” and the positive, supportive environment created throughout the programme 💙

Thank you to everyone involved.

Good luck to all students sitting GCSE Maths Paper 1 today!

As GCSE Maths Paper 1 takes place, it’s a good moment to reflect on what really makes a difference in the lead-up to exams.

Beyond revision resources and classroom teaching, targeted support can play a key role in helping students build confidence and close gaps in time for their exams.

We’ve been fortunate to work with schools and families where that impact is clear. Their feedback reflects something simple but important - when students are given the right support at the right time, progress follows.

Today we’re celebrating International Women in Mathematics Day 👩‍🔬➗

At MathsMakers, we’re proud of the strong representation of women across our organisation, including:
• 7 female trustees (including 2 of our founders)
• 7 female instructors
• 2 female programme staff

We also work with many female students across our programmes, as well as Year 12 female peer mentors who play an important role in supporting younger learners and acting as positive role models.

Representation matters at every level — in leadership, in teaching, in mentoring, and in the classroom. Seeing women involved in maths helps build confidence, aspiration, and a sense of belonging for the next generation.

We’re proud to celebrate the women who are part of MathsMakers, and those we support every day.

Many students don’t struggle with maths because of ability.

They struggle because of confidence.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s worth recognising how closely learning and wellbeing are linked.

When students feel more confident, they engage more—and that’s where progress begins.

Supporting young carers to thrive in maths 💡

We’re proud to be delivering MathsMakers programmes in partnership with Harrow Carers (Harrow Young Carers) and Barnet Carers Centre (Barnet Young Carers), helping young carers build confidence, skills, and a more positive relationship with maths.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Young Harrow Foundation and Deo Duce Foundation to observe one of our sessions.

“It was great to see the programme in action and to witness how engaged the young people were… The support provided by the teachers and young volunteers was excellent, and it was clear that the partnership… is making a real difference.”
– Evaluation and Impact Lead, Young Harrow Foundation

A big thank you to our instructors Davy and Vikas, our brilliant mentors, and our partners for making this work possible.

Together, we’re creating supportive spaces where young carers can succeed.

“I'm just not good at maths.”

It’s something we hear far too often.

In this short video, our Executive Director Helena shares how MathsMakers is supporting young people across England - working in partnership with schools and community organisations to make maths accessible, engaging, and confidence-building.

Together, we can help ensure no child is held back by a lack of confidence or opportunity in maths.
