A campaign by Battersea looks at the ‘hidden cost of cute’ in which dogs and cats are bred for specific characteristics, such as flat faces or folded ears. Social media has played a huge part in promoting these features as cute with little awareness of the costs to health.

This Veterinary Evidence Knowledge Summary by Mohamed Sherif from the Veterinary Specialists of Sydney looks at dogs undergoing brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) surgery and asks, is folded-flap palatoplasty associated with fewer complications and earlier discharge time compared with staphylectomy techniques?

Can cytology accurately predict the malignancy of feline mammary gland tumours?

Based on the available evidence the diagnostic accuracy of cytology in predicting malignancy is high compared to histopathology but further research is needed to confirm its specificity. All preoperative cytological diagnoses should be confirmed with a postoperative histopathological examination.

In this Knowledge Summary, Juulia Virtanen from the University of Helsinki explores this clinical question and what the evidence shows.

How do you approach this in practice?

Behind the scenes with our archive team 👀📜

Not all archival material lives on shelves. Some of the largest and most fragile items in our collections are carefully stored offsite, only occasionally brought out for closer inspection.

Recently, our archive team had the opportunity to examine several nineteenth century RCVS charters, including the original Charter of 1844 and later Supplementary Charters documenting how the veterinary profession evolved over time.

Among the highlights was this spectacular wax seal depicting a female figure, likely representing Queen Victoria, on horseback.
From agreements recognising Scottish veterinary certificates to provisions for overseas-qualified veterinary surgeons joining the profession, these documents offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of veterinary regulation and education.

It’s always a privilege to see these remarkable pieces of veterinary history up close before carefully returning them to their secure home.
