The Effectiveness of Cyproheptadine as a Treatment Option for Cats with Eosinophilic Airway Inflammation.

Based on the four relevant studies found there is no current evidence to support that cyproheptadine monotherapy has any immediate benefit over no treatment for feline eosinophilic airway inflammation, and its use is not supported for this indication. While the strength of this evidence is moderate further studies are warranted in cats with naturally occurring eosinophilic airway disease to draw definitive conclusions about the effects of cyproheptadine.

We’re developing a new decision aid to help dog owners and veterinary teams prepare for, and make decisions together about, care for dogs with Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV).

To make sure it reflects real experiences, we’re looking for:

🐾 Dog owners who have experienced GDV with their dog

🩺 Veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses with experience of caring for dogs at risk of, or affected by, GDV

We’re holding online focus groups to understand what information matters, what makes these decisions difficult, and what kind of support would genuinely help.

Evaluating High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) as a prognostic biomarker for mortality in canine systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Based on the available evidence there is a potential association between higher HMGB1 levels and increased mortality in dogs with SIRS; however, the findings are inconclusive and strength of evidence is weak overall. Further standardised research is needed to fully establish HMGB1’s utility as a prognostic marker in canine SIRS.

A little look back at our AGM last week, where our archive team brought veterinary history to life through a special display of items from our collections.

Trustees, staff and guests had the chance to get up close to original library and archive items spanning four centuries and three continents.

Among the items on display were:

📖 A rare copy of Andrew Snape’s *Anatomy of a Horse*, published in 1687

🗺️ A travelogue written by an army horse trader during a journey from Kenya to Ethiopia in 1911

📜 A poster-sized advert for Indian practitioners in Uttar Pradesh, dating from around 1912

🎨 Anatomical artworks from the 1830s

It was a brilliant reminder that veterinary history isn’t just about dates and old books. These collections tell stories about the people, places, animals and practices that have shaped the profession.

Did you know that rabies causes tens of thousands of deaths annually, yet it is entirely avoidable?

aims to raise awareness about rabies elimination and this year’s “stronger, together” theme reinforces the importance of a One Health approach to achieve a world free from rabies.

Prof. Katie Hampson from the UofG School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine, won the 2026 Plowright Prize for her pioneering research to end dog-mediated rabies.

Katie built a One Health community active in rabies surveillance and control. She will use the £100,000 Plowright Prize grant to support the operationalisation of transboundary One Health plans to sustain and expand rabies-free zones through scaling best practices in East Africa and Southeast Asia.
