The World Community for Christian Meditation Christian Meditation as taught by Fr. John Main OSB

16/06/2026

"I was 17 years clean and sober in the 12-Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
And I was seeking, thirsty. Events in my life brought me to another bottom.
Another place of willing to listen, as only the dying can be. And what I came to find, in this way of prayer, that I'd like to share with you, is a way home." Linda, US.

In the coming weeks, meditators all over the globe will share the way Fr John Main has affected their spiritual journey. John Main OSB (1926-1982) is the founding inspiration of the World Community for Christian Meditation and this year marks the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

"His spirit of wisdom and faith has brought a remarkable phenomenon – the WCCM – into a living entity." says Fr Laurence Freeman

Since human beginnings, religion and culture have been intertwined. At its best this means that the eternal can be felt in all the ordinary passages of human life. But too often has become over-absorbed in this-worldliness, in power-elites, resistance to change and even actively opposed to true human liberation.

Our online series 'The Future of Religion' continues with Sheikh Kabir Helminski TODAY, 16th June at 7 PM (CET).

It continues to be written by you and me. "

‘in meditation we learn to live committed to the rule of prayer and to make it the spiritual foundation underlying all our activity.’ Tim Shriver

Leading this year’s John Main Seminar, Tim asks how a personal practice like directly affects others and helps build a secular society aligned with the peace and justice of the reign of God.
He will explore what Fr John Main means by saying that ‘meditation creates community’?

Tim has long been committed to the work of re-building society: by speaking truth to power and caring for the neglected and marginalised.

"The retreat encouraged me to go on the inside and look at some unresolved issues that I didn't even know I had. It forced me in these 30 minutes of meditation to listen to my thoughts. And even though the monkey brain has us going all over the place, it actually showed me the golden thread in my thoughts." meditator from Trinidad on his experience at the past meditation retreat for meditators aged 18 - 45.

Every year we choose a theme that we feel particularly affects the generation of those in the age group between 18 and 45. This year we'll be focusing on authenticity and vulnerability.

A retreat is not an escape from life — it is a return to what makes life meaningful. The contemplative tradition teaches us that the quality of our outer life flows from the quality of our inner life. When we take time to be still, to pay attention, to simply be — something begins to recalibrate. We start to see more clearly. We begin to act from a deeper place.

Music and silence have long been sources of inner space and resonance. Through guitar compositions, storytelling, and moments of stillness, Bram helps you pause and listen to the story that quietly lives within you.

Being Human, Being Real is a series of four online conversations exploring the depth and beauty of being human in a world often driven by speed, appearances, and disconnection. Each session brings together voices from different paths to reflect on authenticity, presence, vulnerability, and compassion—bridging spirituality, art, and contemporary life.

Registration is completely free. If you cannot join the live session, no problem. We will send you recordings shortly after.

This centenary year of John Main’s birth, we’re reflecting on his 50-year-old letter from Thomas Merton’s hermitage. Even then, he called for a new political language rooted in the contemplative dimension of faith. Today, Tim Shriver reminds us: “In meditation we learn to live committed to the rule of prayer and to make it the spiritual foundation underlying all our activity.”

"Rediscovering is the desired result of all losing" says Fr Laurence Freeman in this video.

We spend so much time wishing we could go back to before we were hurt. But what if the "breakdown" wasn't a mistake, but a necessary chapter?

True recovery isn’t a return to the past—it’s the courage to evolve into a more complete version of your story.

Save this for when you need a reminder that you aren't stuck; you're just in a period of recovery.
