After serving a prison sentence for manslaughter, meeting the parents of the man whose death he had caused challenged Jacob to take responsibility for his actions and rethink his future.

Today, he argues that relationships are key to reducing harm and creating safer communities.

It’s Black History Month 2026!

This year’s theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, is about more than place or postcode. It’s about people.

It’s about recognising the Black individuals whose leadership, care, creativity and commitment strengthen our communities every day, but whose contributions can too often go unseen.

Black History Month rightly celebrates the remarkable figures who have helped shape history. But history isn’t only made in moments of visibility. It is also built every day through acts of service, leadership and responsibility.

At Oasis, our vision is to build stronger communities where there is no one left out. This month, we’re proud to celebrate Black history, honour the contributions of Black people across our communities and take time to listen, learn and reflect.

The new prisoner early release scheme is symptomatic of deep problems within our current prison system.

According to the BBC News, there were 80,829 incomplete Crown Court cases in England and Wales at the end of June, a record high. The number of cases waiting a year or more to conclude also reached a record 23,706. Reoffending rates remain far too high. Our current system simply isn’t working.

We need a new approach. One rooted in restoration rather than punishment.

Because you can’t harm someone to heal them. We believe our current punitive approach is one of the reasons people become trapped in cycles of reoffending, rather than being given the opportunity and support to change.

We believe it’s time to think differently about justice.

This November, our Restoration Revolution conferences will bring together people from across justice, mental health and community work to explore an approach built around prevention, rehabilitation and restoration.

Because if the current system isn’t working, we need to be brave enough to imagine something better.

Why do we need a restoration revolution?

Our prisons are full. Reoffending rates continue to sit eye-wateringly high. Too many people are caught in cycles of harm, punishment and reoffending.

A new approach is needed. One that focuses not just on punishment, but on prevention, rehabilitation and restoration.

That’s why this November we’re running two Restoration Revolution conferences, bringing people together to reimagine what our justice system could look like and how we can build something better.
