An est. 5.4 million children worldwide are living in residential institutions or orphanages, separated from family life because they are poor, disabled or from an ethnic minority. This is a serious problem, on a massive scale, but there is a solution. Lumos works in partnership with governments, professionals, carers, communities, families and children to transform outdated systems that force fami

Since 2022, Lumos Kenya has partnered with the Kenyan Government to keep families together and prevent children from entering residential care. By supporting the Directorate of Children Services to certify foster parents, we are helping more children grow up in safe, loving homes.

Sharon is steadfast in her desire to see a better world for children as she follows the principle to “be the change you wish to see in the world.”

She is a member of our Lumos Kenya Youth Advisory Board, and drawing from her own childhood experience in an institution, she’s sharing her ideas with us as we support the progress of care reform in Kenya.

By generously volunteering her time, her purpose is clear, stating, “I joined the Youth Advisory Board to represent young people, contribute ideas that improve the lives of children and create a positive change in my community.”

This week, as we kick-off International Youth Day, members of our country boards have come together in London for the first meeting of our Global Youth Advisory Board, bringing young people from across the world together to share experiences and build connections.

We would like to thank all the children and young people with lived experience of care and protection systems who work with us. They help us make better decisions, deepen our understanding, and shape how care is designed and improved.

Richard is a young adult, but is already lending his voice and ideas so he can help drive care reform for children.

He has his own experience with an Embu rescue centre in Kenya, and understands how important it is for these types of care systems to prioritise children first, beyond anything else.

As a member of Lumos Kenya’s Youth Advisory Board, he’s already supporting our work to shape the very care systems that impact childhoods as he’s had. We are excited to be working with young people like Richard, because he shares our passion to support others, stating, “People will never forget how you made them feel. The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

Collins has a strong understanding of the need to place children first when creating care systems.

As a young adult, this understanding is partly shaped by his own experience, having lived in an institution as a child, and now he wants to learn more about how care systems go to the very heart of child welfare and safeguarding.

Collins wants to see the continued delivery of care reform in Kenya as a member of the Lumos Kenya Youth Advisory Board. Here, he is able to share his own ideas and shape this change with other young people so that he can help “reintegrate children back to their families”.

We’re on a mission to support over 21,000 children in institutional care in Kenya.

We co-developed Kenya’s 10-year National Care Reform Strategy, which addresses the needs of children in institutions and many more at risk of separation or in need of care across the country.

But we cannot effect change without involving the very children who will benefit from this work. Lumos Kenya’s Care Reform Regional Coordinator explains why involving children and young people is vital.

Collins is an avid learner who wants to build his knowledge on changing child and protection systems for children for the better.

Even at his young age, his own experience at an Embu rescue centre has informed his desire to ensure other children grow up in a safe and loving family.

He’s a member of the Lumos Kenya Youth Advisory Board, helping us to positively change the lives of children, protecting their right to experience a childhood with a family of their own. Because for Collins, “young people are the present, not just the future.”
