To any parents going through a hard time with your child right now, read this message. It’s from a parent called Andrea, who has advice on how to check in with your child about how they are feeling:

"Each child is different but mine hated being asked 'are you okay today?'. They said the 'yes' was for me, not for them, so I stopped asking. Instead, we went with a scale of 1 to 10. If it was a 2, we knew nothing would be achieved and rest was needed. On days that were around a 5, we'd get up and get ready, and maybe have a walk or do some mindfulness. 8 days were fab – we’d do class work for home-schooling. It worked for us."

"Don’t try to fix them, they’re not broken. And don’t tell them 'I want to make you happy'. It’s their job to find happy and it’s yours to love them and hold a safe space for them while they try."

Sometimes, a few kind or reassuring words can make a real difference.

What supportive message would you share with a parent whose child is struggling with exam pressure?

Fewer high-pressure exams. More focus on preparing young people for life beyond school. Less anxiety, fear, burnout and overwhelm. More space for joy. More freedom to explore and make mistakes. More room for mental health and wellbeing.

The education system puts too much focus on exam results. And it's created a toxic culture of stress and anxiety for young people.

Talent and success aren't just reflected through exams. They can show up and be expressed in so many different ways.

Numbers on a piece of paper will never define a young person's worth or potential. And our education system should reflect that.
