Many of the people we support have profound, complex and multiple learning disabilities. As part of our approach to care and to support better mental health, we use sensory-based and mirroring activities to help manage emotions, foster social connection, and create a sense of safety.
Ella (not her real name) is one of the people we support in this way. She is non-speaking; her communication is primarily through touch and points of reference to show what she needs. The progress Ella has made highlights the importance of taking part in activities that respect individual sensory needs and encourage engagement. Our person-centred approach, putting Ella at the forefront, will enable her to lead a more independent and fulfilling live, one where she can communication personal choice.
