Now October has arrived, it’s time to celebrate Harvest Festival and give thanks for all the food grown and gathered from the land. It’s also a time to give thanks for other good things in life, such as family and friendship. During Harvest Festival many people collect food items to deliver to those in their local communities who need a bit of extra help, sharing the gift of harvest.

Ka's brilliant day out at Chessington World of Adventures. Picking a day after the kids had gone back to school, he practically had the park to himself! As well as having learning disabilities, many of the people we support are autistic. Communication differences between autistic and non-autistic people can lead to mutual misunderstandings. Effective communication is a shared responsibility and only works when everyone is included.

These 8 tips, adapted from ‘Is That Clear? Effective Communication in a Neurodiverse World’, by Zanne Gaynor, Kathryn Alevizos and Joe Butler, are based on what autistic people want you to know and do:

Slow down

Allow processing time

Make it visual

Make it personal

Use short and manageable questions and instructions

Say ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’

Avoid confusing language

Validate different ways of communicating, not just words

The summer is over but autumn is here, one of our favourite times of the year. We like to go for a walk in the local park or just around our own gardens to see the changing seasons. Having use of these outdoor spaces is so important, for both physical and mental health. Maintaining these spaces at our projects is a priority for us. They have a huge positive impact on the quality of life for the people we support. Many of the young women who come to us have suffered trauma. They arrive frightened, anxious and vulnerable. The support we give is focused on building confidence and developing the skills and resilience needed to feel more secure and confident. What a great summer we’ve had! But now it’s time to get ready for a new autumn term. Many of the people we support attend college or day centres, where they take part in social activities and learn a variety of practical skills aimed at developing independence. From help with cooking and daily routines to creative classes in art and music, the activities are an important part of the support we offer to enable our clients to live more independent, fulfilling lives. We are so proud of all our care and support workers. As well as being professional carers, they are also educators, helping the people we support to become an inclusive part of their communities.

As one team member recently told us, “It's all about seeing my clients have fun and grow in confidence. Last year my client experienced a roller-coaster for the first time and his reaction of pure joy and laughter is why I do this job!”

Introducing our new finance director, Sue Boswell, she told us, “Although my title is director of finance, my task is not just about churning what we have in the pot, it’s about asking questions as we go along, thinking about how we can do more without compromising our high standards of care. Everything comes back to our purpose – why we exist. We give people aspirations and choices, something to look forward to. We help to make their lives the best they can be, giving them opportunities to be part of society and the ability to choose for themselves.”
