Managing everyday domestic tasks can seem like a chore for most of us, but for the people we support being able to do housework in their own home is a sign of progress toward being fully independent. Our mission is to enable our residents to lead fulfilling and independent lives. Find out more about our approach to care. www.fieldlane.org.uk

We love spending time in our garden! Being in a garden can reduce stress, boost our mood and improve our mental health. This is the perfect time of year to be out enjoying the plants and flowers as they come into full bloom. Having full use of an outdoor space is important for the people we support, it offers a safe place in which to develop new skills, relax, and to have fun.

Many of the people we support have profound, complex and multiple learning disabilities. As part of our approach to care and to support better mental health, we use sensory-based and mirroring activities to help manage emotions, foster social connection, and create a sense of safety.

Ella (not her real name) is one of the people we support in this way. She is non-speaking; her communication is primarily through touch and points of reference to show what she needs. The progress Ella has made highlights the importance of taking part in activities that respect individual sensory needs and encourage engagement. Our person-centred approach, putting Ella at the forefront, will enable her to lead a more independent and fulfilling live, one where she can communication personal choice.

What a fun day out exploring Windsor Castle! Ka struggles with busy crowds due to his autism, so days out like this are only possible with the right support, understanding and having a trusting relationship with his care and support worker. Ka really enjoyed himself and felt like the king 👑 of the castle 🏰

Can you help us fund more uplifting days out? www.fieldlane.org.uk/donate

May is Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness of the impact of mental health on our lives. We support people with learning disabilities; some are also autistic and have other behavioural challenges. We encourage activities that benefit mental health and help the people we support to find positive coping strategies. Good mental health is integral to our approach to care. Whether it’s an outing to the seaside, watching a football match together, having a cup of tea at home with housemates, or doing some arts & crafts, all these activities encourage good mental health and encourage the people we support to make connections and develop the skills and confidence to live more independent and fulfilling life.

To mark World Autism Acceptance Month in April, we planted an apple tree to represent ‘Grow Your Awareness on Autism’. Adam and Stuart took charge of the digging and planting. The tree was especially chosen because the apple is a fruit many people with autism particularly enjoy because of its shape and texture.

Konstantina Papadopoulou recently joined our board of trustees. She brings with her a wealth of professional experience from her work in global real estate and a personal interest in the care sector. We asked her about her first impressions of Field Lane, she said, ”Visiting two Field Lane projects early on and meeting the staff made a deep impression on me. The level of dedication I witnessed was remarkable. It's one thing to read about an organisation's work, it's quite another to see it first-hand. That experience has only strengthened my commitment to making an impactful contribution to Field Lane.” Read the full interview here.

What happened to Alicia [not her real name] is familiar to many of the young women at Andrew Provan House. She was referred to us due to homelessness. At that time, she had a two-year-old child and was pregnant. Prior to coming to us, Alicia had been forced to move from several different addresses. She was very anxious and afraid. One of her biggest anxieties was not being in a safe place to bring up her children and fearing that she didn’t have the skills to be a good parent. Moving into Andrew Provan House gave Alicia the security and support she needed to develop skills and confidence. Alicia wants to share her own experience to offer hope to other women who have suffered similar traumas.
