Thursday 30 July is the United Nation’s International Day of Friendship. Friendship holds a special kind of power. It invites us to listen before we judge, to stay when it's easier to walk away. Through friendship we can begin to shape the world as it could be. A world where people can live with independence, dignity and choice. This is at the very heart of Field Lane’s mission.

We recently met up with one of our new trustees, Funbi Matthew to ask her about joining Field Lane, she told us, “I chose Field Lane because its values resonate strongly with my own. As a Christian charity with a long and distinguished history of supporting adults with learning disabilities and vulnerable families, Field Lane has consistently demonstrated its commitment to helping people live with dignity, independence and choice. I believe everyone deserves to be valued, supported and treated with dignity and respect.” Read the full interview here: www.fieldlane.org.uk/post/dignity-independence

Everyone loves to chat, but some people need to do it differently. At Field Lane we like to challenge everyday notions about what communication is, and we don’t rely on just talking. Communication is about giving and sharing information in a way that is easily accessible. It's also about listening. In addition to learning disabilities, many of the people we support have other challenges, such as being non-verbal or they are autistic. Finding alternative ways to communicate and be understood is an essential part of the support we give. We use signs, symbols and touch to communicate, as well as using a tablet or digital device. Modifying tone and speed of speech and being mindful of body language are also important ways to ensure clear, accessible communication. This weekend marked the summer solstice, the time of year when the sun pauses in the sky, creating the longest day. It also marks the official start of summer and the holiday season. Being able to go on holiday is so important for the people we support, giving them confidence and more independence. Our aim is to enable the people in our care to make their own choices, and support them in living independent, fulfilling lives.
