From 5th-11th October, we’re celebrating one of Britain’s most treasured, and threatened, native species.

Red squirrels are the UK’s only native squirrel, but sadly they have disappeared from much of their natural habitat. Today, they survive in fragmented populations, with around 75% of the UK’s remaining red squirrels found in Scotland.

But there is hope. Conservation work, habitat management, monitoring and the dedication of volunteers and local conservation groups are helping to protect red squirrel populations and their woodland homes.

This Red Squirrel Awareness Week, we’re celebrating everyone playing a part in giving red squirrels a future. 🌳❤️

RSST apology to Carole Neesam

In 2024, Carole Neesam was crowned RSST Volunteer of the Year for 2023, winning the David Stapleford Award.

As is customary with all our winners, we spoke at length to Carole in order to discover how she became involved in trying to save red squirrels in the Bedlington area. The award winners’ stories are posted on our website at www.rsst.org.uk. Unfortunately in Carole's case, her story never made it to the website. The RSST would like to apologise to Carole for this omission and her story can now be found on our website along with all the previous winners.

Red squirrels have been part of Britain’s woodlands for more than 10,000 years, but fewer than 300,000 remain in the UK today.

The Red Squirrel Survival Trust, along with the UK Squirrel Accord are supporting pioneering research into a safe, targeted fertility-control programme for grey squirrels. Alongside woodland protection, monitoring and volunteer conservation, this could give red squirrels the chance to recover naturally.

🍂🐿️ Autumn is one of the best times to look out for our native red squirrels. As the leaves begin to fall and nuts and seeds cover the woodland floor, reds become especially active - feeding up and storing food to help them through the colder months.

They don’t hibernate, but they do slow down during very cold weather, so autumn is a great opportunity to see them in action.

🌳 Look for movement in the tree canopy
👀 Don’t forget your binoculars
🤫 Keep quiet and give them space
🐕 If possible, leave dogs at home - squirrels will see dogs before you see squirrels
🗑️ Take your litter home and follow the Countryside Code

So grab your binoculars, head into the woods and keep your eyes peeled… you might just spot a flash of red!
