Wednesday 17th June is Falconry in Yorkshire!

Something really different - this is a fascinating introduction to the world of raptors - birds of prey.

Kira and the crew of KL Falconry have invited Sportability for a very special day of falconry, on Wednesday 17th June 2026.

Part informal lecture, part participation as you actually get to hold the giant Eagle, the Harris Hawk or the cheeky Eagle Owl and learn a great deal about these beautiful creatures.

Our resident expert, Kira will treat you to a display of hunting and flying that is both impressive and exhilarating.

The birds will swoop low over your head, feed whilst perched on your arm, or flash into the lure like an Exocet.

And it is all explained in an informative, humorous, earthy style by the hugely knowledgeable and personable Kira.

KL Falconry in Yorkshire is one of the biggest centres in the UK for birds of prey, with over 200 specimens!

These include all types of owls, eagles, falcons and hawks and you'll get to up close and personal: Handle the birds feed and fly them.

With a fantastic selection of these beautiful creatures It is not only exciting and educational, but a great natural experience.

And please: Don't worry if you have never had an owl on your arm before, you'll be amazed at what you might achieve.

It is always a day of fun and discovery. It's not about being an expert - absolute beginners or never-evers all welcomed.

The plan is to meet prompt at 10.30 am and finish approximately 1-1.30 pm

You can bring a packed lunch or if you wish to buy something to eat there is a small cafe a few minutes away.

This event is weather dependent, as the birds cannot fly in the rain or if it is too hot.

And remember that with Sportability anyone within our remit can participate free of charge.

Please contact Valerie via email at [email protected] to book.

Tuesday 16th June is Sailing in Bolton!

We're delighted to announce a fabulous sailing opportunity with Bolton Sailability (see Bolton Sailing Club) on 16th June.

The Bolton Sailing Club is found at Belmont Road, Bolton, BL7 8BD

[Easy to overshoot the turning to the sailing club once on the A675 (Belmont Road), so be super alert once you leave Belmont village. Also the what3words are shippers.fear.interviewer ]

They have a variety of boats for you to experience the joy, the fun, the exhilaration of sailing with their fleet comprising Hansa, Laser Stratos and, most important for us, Access dinghies.

The Access was designed specifically to meet the needs of disabled sailors.

With their heavily weighted keels and inbuilt buoyancy, they are very stable. Seated low, and facing forwards, movement within the boat is NOT required.

The only controls needed for sailing are a joystick, with left/right movement for steering, and a rope, pulled or released, to control the sails.

You'll be able to start sailing these boats immediately, accompanied by an experience sailor cm instructor from the Club. But very soon you can easily sail them on your own.

So complete novices and never-evers are more than welcome! And for more experienced sailors there's a range of other boats also available.

There is wheelchair access throughout the Clubhouse and onto the pontoon. They will provide a hoist if needed for easier access to the boats.

They can also provide slings but if you have your own sling please bring this, buoyancy aids and waterproofs.

Life Jackets are of course provided, but we suggest that you bring a towel and perhaps a change of clothes - you might get wet!

There is a wheelchair accessible bathroom with hoist and changing bed.

Don't worry if you haven't tried sailing before, there will be plenty of hands-on advice, guidance and instruction.

You don't need special clothing, anything that is comfortable is OK. Tracksuits and trainers are ideal. But it will always feel cooler on the water, so it's a good idea to bring an extra layer.

Wednesday 10th June is Microlight Flying over St Albans!

We are delighted to announce our June 2026 date for one of our most popular events - Microlight Flying.

We're working with Rob and Richard at Exodus Airsports - a really enthusiastic couple of guys - who will introduce you to the thrills and excitement of flying on Wednesday 10th June.

Exodus Airsports is based at Plaistows Farm Airfield, situated in Chiswell Green, just outside St Albans in Hertfordshire.

Just a mile from the M25 and M1, it is very convenient for North London and easily reachable from most parts of the south of England.

Chiswell Green Lane is a narrow country lane and, after a sharp right-hand bend look for the Plaistows Farm sign and entry to the airfield is on the left after the long barn.

We'll meet at the Car Park promptly at 9.45 am and for safety reasons wait to be escorted to the Main Hanger.

Chief Flying Instructor Rob started flying at the age of 10 and has been instructing for more than 20 years.

Richard is also a highly experienced instructor, flying both flex wing and fixed wing.

Both these CAA-approved instructors are dedicated to making flying for people with disabilities a reality.

The aircraft you'll be flying is Flex-Wing GT450 Microlight. This aircraft design originates from the early days where an engine was attached to a hang glider.

Nowadays they have fantastic performance similar to that of a small fixed wing aircraft. The seating arrangement is front to back and the cockpit is open.

Flying suits are worn for extra warmth as well as helmets and headsets.

Rob or Richard will be taking you up for an approximate 20 minute flight. During the flight you will take control of the aircraft under their direction. That's what we call an Experience!

Flying suits and helmets will be provided and there are no particular dress requirements. But, please, no shorts or sandals. Not for aesthetic reasons, but for safety and comfort.

And don't worry if you have never seen a microlight before, just be ready to be amazed at what you can achieve!

Important Notice: The following health restrictions apply in all cases: Persons flying should weigh no more than 110kg and not suffer with epilepsy.
