Should UK taxpayers fund the detention in France of people escaping torture and war - or invest in safe, accessible ways to seek asylum in the UK?

Annabelle’s life changed when she fell in love. She had no idea same s*x relationships were illegal in her home country.

She was arrested. Imprisoned. Tortured. For a decade.

Through specialised therapy she’s beginning to heal, and although she still struggles, the progress she has made is phenomenal.

It’s support like yours that make these services possible. Donate this Pride Month and help an LGBTQ+ survivor heal.

Age assessments should be carried out by experienced social workers, not AI.

"Behind every age disputed refugee is a child who has survived the unimaginable. We deserve safety, dignity and the chance to grow up free from harm." - Jean, a member of Young Outspoken Survivors.

Everyone deserves safety, dignity, and to live freely as themselves, not in fear.

Yet, in over 60 countries, being LGBTQ+ can mean imprisonment, violence, or even the death penalty.

At Freedom from Torture, our clinicians support people who have fled persecution to heal, through specialist therapy.

This Pride, stand with LGBTQ+ survivors of torture. Donate today.

Torture is always wrong.

At a time when the global torture ban is under threat and the UK is taking steps which risk watering down our vital protections against torture, we are reiterating this message loud and clear.

Nasrin a survivor of torture from Iran, writes:

"Since the US and Israel struck Iran on 28 February 2026, over 4,000 people in the country have been arrested on national security charges.

Many have been disappeared and tortured. Political prisoners have been executed and reports of forced “confessions”, extracted through torture are common.

We must stand shoulder to shoulder with the Iranian people in their struggle for a life free from torture."

No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to live in safety. Yesterday’s judgment is a vital and resounding victory for torture survivors, who for too long have suffered under this harmful policy.

“The judgment makes clear that the government acted unlawfully in changing its policy. We have seen the consequences of those changes: survivors of torture have been placed in harm’s way. This must serve as a wake-up call for the government to listen to the experts and finally provide safe and secure housing once and for all.”

We won! 🎉

The Home Office’s changes to their “Allocation of Asylum Accommodation Policy” have been found to be unlawful. 🙌

In 2024, Freedom from Torture and the The Helen Bamber Foundation began a challenge to changes to the Home Office’s “Allocation of Asylum Accommodation Policy” which forced survivors of torture to share rooms with strangers, placing them at risk of harm.

Yesterday the Court has found that the Secretary of State for the Home Department (SSHD) breached her duty to consult with us before introducing the change in policy, and failed to adequately assess the impact of the changes on those affected by it, particularly people who have disabilities and other protected characteristics.

We are delighted with the result and will never give up fighting for dignity and justice for survivors of torture. 👏
