Asylum decisions can be a matter of life and death.

The Government's new Immigration and Asylum Bill proposes major changes to the way asylum appeals are decided.

The Government says the reforms will help reduce delays in the asylum system. We're concerned that some of the proposals could weaken important safeguards, make the appeals process less independent, and increase the risk of wrong decisions being made.

Appeals are a vital safeguard. When mistakes happen, they provide an independent review and help ensure people aren't wrongly refused protection and returned to persecution, torture or other serious harm.

These protests we've seen in Dover and Portsmouth are a stark and chilling reminder that hateful rhetoric inspires hateful acts.

We know from the survivors of torture we work with every day how terrifying it can be to see groups of masked people gathering in intimidation, particularly for those who have fled unimaginable horrors to reach safety in the UK.

But we also know that the majority of people in this country welcome people seeking safety. It's compassion that will resist and defeat forces of division. That's who we are.

No-one should feel unsafe in Britain and people seeking safety must never be singled out as targets for intimidation. We have long warned that this can have violent consequences and the demonisation of refugees/ asylum seekers for cheap political gain must stop immediately.

Those seeking sanctuary must also be able to live in peace and dignity so they can recover and rebuild their lives.

Our therapeutic work with survivors of torture shows just how profoundly damaging detention is.

Survivors should never be detained. Even the briefest period in detention can increase the risk of su***de and self-harm.

Yet despite the evidence of harm, the Government is not only continuing but expanding its use.

📊 Our research found that universities across the UK provide higher degrees to members of security forces from repressive states around the world, without conducting adequate human rights checks.

Our Head of Accountability states: ”Exeter University must urgently ask how this training could be used by a regime with a deeply troubling record of human rights abuses, including torture."

✉️ "Please support survivors like me."

Nadine knows how life-changing specialist support can be. But right now, demand is high, and we can only help 1 out of every 3 people referred to us.

Please give today and help ensure more survivors aren't turned away. ❤️

TRIGGER WARNING: references to sexual violence and torture.

UN experts have appealed for an end to sexual torture & violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid a growing number of testimonies from civilian victims.

But behind every statistic and faceless story is a person whose life has been changed forever.

Sexual violence is a deliberate weapon used to punish and humiliate people, families and entire communities.

More and more, we are seeing it used as a brutal tactic of war, torture and terrorism in conflicts right across the globe.

The international community must listen to survivors' needs. We must stand with them, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Torture can have long-lasting impacts on both mental and physical health.

Through therapy, group activities, medical support and pain management services, we support survivors as they heal, recover and rebuild their lives.

Recovery looks different for everyone, but specialist support can make a life-changing difference. 🙏

We're with Manchester Pride in spirit this weekend. 🏳️‍🌈

Looking back at some moments from London Pride last month. 🤩

Across our centres, including Manchester, we support LGBTQ+ people who have sought safety in the UK after experiencing torture and persecution.

We'll always celebrate resilience, champion equality, and raise our voices for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ people everywhere.
