FGM sits within the UK’s violence against women and girls agenda and is increasingly grouped under “honour-based abuse” alongside forced marriage. The latest cross-government strategy, Freedom from Violence and Abuse, sets an ambition to halve violence against women and girls within a decade, but makes very little mention of FGM.

The following insights on the State of FGM in the UK is a stark reminder that when FGM is sidelined, survivors are sidelined. Despite being a criminal offence in the UK under the Female Ge***al Mutilation Act 2003, thousands of women and girls remain at risk. Zero tolerance must mean zero invisibility.

📢 “We are calling for robust cross-sector collaboration, better data, and equitable care to ensure women and girls in the UK are protected from FGM and adequately supported.”

FGM is not a cultural issue. It is a human rights violation.

If the ambition is to halve violence against women and girls, FGM must not be left behind.

💜Standing with women and girls every step of the way:

We believe that eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls requires an approach which responds to, and addresses the links between multiple forms of violence many African women and girls experience.

The findings revealed shocking insights, highlighting significant gaps in awareness, prevention, and access to support services.

🚨 Insights that have prompted us to reopen FGM Survey!

This is just the beginning. In 2026, we are committed to building momentum across the UK to address these gaps, strengthen prevention efforts, and create meaningful, care-centred solutions for survivors.

🚨 1 in 5 people do not know about FGM Protection Orders.

FGM Protection Orders are a vital legal safeguard designed to protect women and girls at risk of Female Ge***al Mutilation.

Yet too many people are unaware that this protection exists. When awareness is low, women and girls impacted by or at risk of FGM may feel they have nowhere to turn. This contributes to levels of silence and shame.

We must do more to raise awareness, strengthen prevention, and ensure that everyone knows where to find help and support.

No one should face FGM alone. Awareness can save lives.

Our new survey results reveal just how urgently we need to keep the conversation about FGM going in the UK.

📊 Over 1 in 3 respondents say they know someone affected by the consequences of FGM in the UK.
🗣️ 3 in 4 agree that talking about FGM openly helps protect women and girls.
❗ 29% still believe FGM is religiously required — it isn’t.
📍 1 in 2 people don’t know how to access FGM support services in the UK.

These findings show both growing awareness and the gaps that still exist. Open conversations, accurate information, and better access to support can make a real difference.

📅 We’ll be sharing more insights from this survey throughout the week.
