Pecan

Pecan Transforming lives, transforming communities. Pecan is a Christian organisation started by local churches 25 years ago.

We help people who face seemingly impassable barriers to find a way through, to re-write their futures, to flourish. We work with the most vulnerable people in the Peckham community – including ex-offenders and their families, people living with mental health issues and the long-term unemployed. We never stop believing that all people can achieve their God-given potential. And our work prompts tra

nsformation across the community. We see those we work with as people who need supporting – not problems which need solving. We believe in unlocking people’s own potential. Which is why our projects address all the needs of our participants – social, material, emotional and spiritual. We partner with local churches and advocate for those we work with, challenging inequality and injustice at a local and national level.

It's Volunteers' Week (1–7 June) and it’s a chance to celebrate the incredible people who help us tackle poverty in Southwark through our connected services. At Pecan our volunteers support every part of our work, from the foodbank and pantries to our community spaces. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been reflecting on the impact of volunteering, from supporting mental health and wellbeing to sharing inspiring personal journeys. This week, we’re proud to highlight the story of our Employment Manager, whose own volunteering journey began right here at Pecan.

Early risers - tomorrow (20th) is our May London Bridge Bucket Collection! Our Pecan team will be out with buckets, bags and Trussell bibs, so come and say hello, donate, or ask about Pecan. Every month, you help families facing financial insecurity in Southwark to access our foodbank. Last month, commuters at London Bridge helped us raise £1,228.32 which was enough for us to supply 28 small family food parcels. Thank you and see you tomorrow.

Awareness days and weeks help shine a light on important issues, but for us, it always comes back to people, community and belonging. We’ll end Mental Health Awareness Week with words from John* who attends Andys Man Club, that we host at Pecan every Monday, 7–9pm:

“Peckham Andy’s Man Club is my family. As I’m homeless, I could attend any AMC anywhere in the country and know I’d find supportive, welcoming men. But since coming here in October, Peckham is my fam. And Pecan my home.”

When we asked one of our Food Services volunteers about mental health and volunteering, Toni shared: 'That’s a difficult question as I don’t often think about what volunteering does for me! I would have to say that it helps being part of something that is doing good and helping people in an increasingly difficult world.’

During Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s been wonderful hearing from our volunteers about why they give their time. Talking openly helps raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health, while reminding us of the importance of belonging and community. Thank you to all our volunteers ❤️

During Mental Health Awareness Week, we've been highlighting the positive impact volunteering can have on mental wellbeing by helping to reduce stress, ease loneliness and build confidence and connection.

Two of our foodbank volunteers shared: “Helping other people helps to put my own problems in perspective. Mental health issues make me feel useless, but helping others at the foodbank makes me feel good that I'm helping someone else in my community.” - Val*

‘Being able to connect with others, volunteers and clients, helps alleviate my sense of isolation and makes me see I'm not the only one with problems’ - Barbara*

'In Southwark, 1 in 3 residents report feeling lonely often or some of the time, which is higher than the national average' – (Impact on Urban Health). At Pecan, we want people to feel connected, supported and valued. So we do our part within Southwark for community wellbeing John*, one of our warehouse volunteers since 2023, shared:
“Volunteering at Pecan has improved my wellbeing by giving me structure, purpose and regular contact with thoughtful, supportive and funny people. Helping others has had a positive impact on my mental health too.”

Thank you to volunteers like John who make our community stronger every day.
