Being made redundant can leave you feeling like you need to find your next job as quickly as possible.

But before you start sending applications everywhere, if you’re able to, give yourself some time to take stock.

Write down your achievements, projects, responsibilities and any training or CPD while they’re still fresh in your mind. Think about the skills you’ve developed especially the ones that could transfer into a completely different role or sector.

Then ask yourself what you actually want next. Do you want to stay on the same path, or could this be an opportunity to explore something different?

And then there’s the question many people worry about: how do I explain my redundancy to a future employer?

Be honest although that doesn’t mean explaining every detail.

You don’t necessarily need to mention it on your CV or cover letter. But if the question is asked be prepared, keep it factual and focus on the future.

Concentrate on your successes and how that approach can be brought to your next employer.

Redundancy closes a role. It doesn’t erase the experience you gained while you were there.
