Our Leeds Coordinators, Suzanne Benjamin and Sofie Hirschstein, recently met with support workers, the housing manager and finance officer at Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) to share more about Paperweight and how we can help residents.

The session was well attended and warmly received. Thank you to the LJHA team for welcoming us. We look forward to continuing to work closely together to support the Leeds community.

Today, we were delighted to host a Rosh Chodesh breakfast at our Manchester office, welcoming Rebbetzins from across Manchester.

It was a lovely opportunity to share more about what we do at Paperweight and how we can support members of the community through life’s practical challenges. We also enjoyed hearing about the issues facing different communities, sharing experiences and discussing how we can work together to make sure people get the support they need.

It was lovely to welcome Lisa Wimborne, Chief Executive of Jewish Blind & Disabled, and Aidan McCarthy, Director of Housing Management & Community Services, to the Paperweight office. We enjoyed getting to know more about each other’s work and sharing ideas for how we can work together to support our shared clients and residents. Thank you, Lisa and Aidan, for such a warm and helpful conversation. We look forward to building on it!

Could dementia diagnosis soon become much quicker?
The government has announced an £80 million Dementia Challenge, supporting new technologies designed to help people receive a dementia diagnosis faster and more accurately.
At present, many families wait months and sometimes more than a year for answers. The ambition is that by 2029, 92% of people referred for a dementia assessment will receive their results within 18 weeks, compared with around 60% currently.
Earlier diagnosis can mean earlier access to treatment and support. Just as importantly, it can give individuals and their families more time to understand their options and make informed decisions about care, finances and the future.
For many families, though, a dementia diagnosis is just the beginning of the journey.
At Paperweight Trust’s Eldercare Hub, we see how families can need practical guidance alongside medical support, whether that is navigating benefits, understanding care arrangements or planning ahead.
Earlier answers can give families valuable time to plan, prepare and put the right support in place.

Paperweight Executive Director Barry Shaw and Caseworker Arlene Barc were delighted to speak to members of Hadley Wood United Synagogue on Wednesday evening, where Arlene is a longstanding member.

Barry explained the work of Paperweight in the context of the “Tzedakah” component of the “Teshuvah, Tefila, Tzedakah” phrase in our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayers.

Arlene spoke about how satisfying it is to work as a Paperweight Caseworker:

“The change in a client visiting for the first time looking forlorn and anxious, to the same person regaining their confidence, looking assured and knowing their path forward, is truly gratifying and uplifting.”
