Happy birthday, maestro 🎂 💯

BOTD in 1926, German conductor Klaus Tennstedt made his debut with the LPO in 1977. He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor in 1980, then Principal Conductor in 1983.

According to his obituary in the Independent, 'His association with the London Philharmonic was characterised by both sides as a love affair... Every concert he gave was an event: audience, musicians and conductor alike would emerge shaken.' As well as dozens of memorable live performances, he made many acclaimed recordings with us, including a complete cycle of Mahler symphonies.

It was a joy to perform across Europe with our Principal Guest Conductor, Karina Canellakis, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who's celebrating an incredible 50 years on stage.
