Saffron Kitchen Project Our mission is to support displaced and vulnerable people in building healthy, autonomous lives, using food as a toolkit.

We are a community that leverages food so people can eat, cook, learn and most importantly, feel that they belong. We are a registered non-profit organisation that creates high quality, nutritious meals for vulnerable communities in Athens. Inspired by multiple cultures and traditions, we aim to do three things simultaneously: Nourish, Train, Employ. Our first pillar - Nourish – provides high quality fresh food to people in a sustainable way. We partner with several organisations that support vulnerable people throughout Athens, distributing delicious meals whilst avoiding food waste as much as possible. The second pillar – Train – offers free culinary education and vocational training in partnership with IEK Delta. In an effort to prepare our students for work in the hospitality industry, the programme comprises culinary skills as well as soft skills training such as teamwork, leadership and time management. Upon completion students will receive a recognised EOPEP certificate which will aid them in entering the job market. Finally, the third pillar – Employ – demonstrates our commitment to tackling unemployment in Greece by not only employing but also generating job opportunities for people from the refugee community.

This month’s data shows that the vast majority of takeaway meals are collected by individuals who pick up multiple meals for other members of their household or community.

These figures reflect what we already know about many of our wonderful service users: they often collect meals on behalf of others, including individuals who are physically unable or otherwise limited in their ability to collect meals from our space themselves.

In this way, every collection reaches a little further, extending our support beyond the person at the door and helping us show up for more of our community! ❤️‍🔥

Applications are now open until deadline of 21/09!

In partnership with and@echo100plus we offer free accredited Vocational Training in Basic to Advanced Culinary Skills to refugees and asylum seekers. 🎓

This Training Course is designed for individuals who either already hold some experience working in professional kitchens or had no experiences yet, as this course will transition from a Basic Level to an Advanced Level Course over its two month duration.

When:
Classes will be held over a total of 24 sessions starting on 12th of October. Classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5.30 - 9pm over 12 weeks total.🗓️

Where:
IEK Delta Centre, Ippokratous Street 22 Athens.📍

Course details:
Our training teaches professional basic and advanced cooking skills, menu planning, and plating techniques. Participants gain hands-on experience in creating diverse, high-quality dishes and much more. Furthermore we introduce our students to a professional working environment as typically found in Greece’s hospitality industry - making them feel prepared and ready to start their culinary career path.👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Language: English

What you receive:
The participants will receive a certificate issued by IEK DELTA and recognised by EOPPEP (the National Organisation for Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance). 📄 As well as an employability training which leads to one on one CV writing and job search/application support.

Needed application requirements:
Good knowledge of English is mandatory, 18+ years old, a serious interest in working in the culinary industry and a strong interest to sharpen and expand culinary skills. Please note this is a vocational training course and not a recreational hobby course.💪

We really didn't want to write this post... but sadly the time has come to say goodbye to our incredible intern, Mathilde. ❤️

Over the past months, Mathilde has become a huge part of the team. From carrying out critical research on Greece's housing crisis, homelessness, and rising food costs, to helping us secure funding for essential cooking oils, she's made a real impact behind the scenes. And she also earned herself the prestigious title of undisputed Presentation Queen!

We're going to miss having you in the office, but we're even more excited to see what's next for you.

Thank you for everything, Mathilde. It already feels strange without you. We know you'll go on to do amazing things & you're always welcome back!! 💛

Two weeks ago, over a hundred of displaced individuals and families, primarily from Sudan, were evicted in Athens, leaving them without access to most basic necessities.

Together with Intersos Hellas - Intersos Ελλάδα and and other partners on the ground, an urgent response was quickly coordinated to ensure people had immediate support. While our partners organised emergency assistance including supermarket vouchers and transitional support, we prepare and provide hundreds of meals over the past two weeks, with food support continuing as needed.

A huge thank you to the teams at Love Without Borders for acting so swiftly and INTERSOS Hellas providing supermarket vouchers to make this coordinated response possible. ❤️
