Huge thank you to Shegrowsveg for the wonderful donation of plants from their stand at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show. 🌱

We transplanted Chard, Nasturtiums and Cosmos at the Ealing Road community allotment, residents from Magellan Court were eager to choose what to plant in their raised beds and the gardening club at Elsley Court benefitted from the abundance of ferns.

Residents will soon be benefiting from weekly gardening sessions led by Billy, our Community Growing Organiser, helping to build confidence, connection and wellbeing through growing together.

We also look forward to welcoming the funding panel from Brent Giving, who will be meeting our residents and lending a hand with some planting. 🌼🌿

🌱 Exciting progress at Wykeham Primary School!
A huge thank you to Brodie Biomass for delivering 5 tonnes of compost/biochar mix, generously sponsored by A Healthier Earth.
The Year 3 gardening class got hands-on with sustainable growing after watching a no-dig vegetable patch tutorial inspired by the free resources from Charles Dowding.
The pupils then created their own vegetable beds by:
🌿 Laying cardboard over the grass to suppress weeds naturally
🌿 Using wheelbarrows, buckets, and spades to transport and spread the compost mix
🌿 Measuring out neat rectangular beds with wooden frames
🌿 Leaving pathways between beds, soon to be covered with woodchip to retain moisture and prevent soil compaction
This is a fantastic example of young people learning practical skills, teamwork, and the importance of healthy soil systems. We can’t wait to see what grows next! 🌱

At the last few sessions at Pembury we have been working with the Youth Club to make some colourful signage for the garden, increasing accessibility and understanding of regenerative community growing.

🍂 "Browns and Greens" 🍃 to help with understanding composting ratios, "Hügelkultur" to signpost our regenerative self watering beds as well as some other useful signage that helps the community members to best take care of their amazing garden.

🌿 Gardening doesn't always have to be about getting your hands muddy and grubby. The garden provides an opportunity for all aspects of interaction and what better than a bit of art and craft 😁 🎨

The Barkantine Roof Garden Project was led by Erica Walcott, the Barkantine Clinic’s Operational Manager in 2024. She identified the potential of under-utilised roof spaces to be transformed into a growing area that residents, staff, and patients could enjoy and benefit from.

Seeds for Growth charity, together with our partners and collaborators developed the two roof areas into growing spaces with raised beds.

✨ Next time you visit the Co-op, please consider voting for our cause; Green Dreams. The more votes we get the more funds we will receive from their Local Community Fund. ✨

At our Green Dreams project we warmly welcome people who feel lonely or socially isolated to join our team gardening sessions in communal growing spaces. We are well known, with people hearing about us through the NHS, GPs, schools, and voluntary organisations. Our attendees face challenges related to low mental health, bereavement, or learning disabilities.

Alongside the gardening sessions, we offer therapeutic walks and immersive, nature-based experiences, including daytime excursions to communal growing sites and nature conservation areas across London. We are seeking funding to launch Green Dreams gardening sessions at the Chisenhale Centre, at 64 Chisenhale Road, near Mile End and Victoria Park. The centre users, the local schools and GPs all have people waiting for us to start.
