🌱 Growing resilience at Wykeham Primary School

We recently installed a drip-line irrigation system across the school’s no-dig beds to help keep the vegetables growing throughout the summer.
Wykeham is a particularly hot site, receiving full sun all day as well as strong winds across the playing field. These conditions have caused the beds to dry out quickly, making it difficult for the children to keep them adequately watered. The new system is connected to a timer and will now water the beds automatically.

We also enriched the soil with additional compost and a natural blood, fish and bone fertiliser, before sowing beetroot, borage and lamb’s lettuce. If they establish well, these smaller-leaved plants will act as a living cover crop—helping the soil retain moisture while protecting it from the wind. Fingers crossed for successful germination! 🌱

Meanwhile, the vegetables donated by She Grows Veg Ltd have settled in beautifully. This week’s harvest included:
🥬 Red lettuce
🥬 Cavolo nero
🌈 Rainbow chard
The tomato plants have been held back by the dry conditions, but with regular water and a nourishing feed now in place, we hope to see plenty of new growth, flowers and—eventually—delicious tomatoes. 🍅

A huge thank you to She Grows Veg Ltd for generously donating the beautiful plants from this year's Chelsea Flower Show installation.

The staff at The Barkantine Health Clinic Wellbeing Roof Garden project have been busy planting them on the staff common room balcony, creating a greener, more welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. It's been wonderful to see everyone come together, get their hands dirty, and help transform the area into somewhere that supports wellbeing, connection, and a moment of calm during the working day.

We're so grateful to She Grows Veg for helping us bring a little piece of Chelsea to the wellbeing garden and for supporting the importance of green spaces in our community.

🌱 Green Dreams Update 💚

At Seeds for Growth, we believe that bringing people together through nature helps build stronger, healthier communities.

It was wonderful to see families come together at our Green Dreams event at Chisenhale Art Centre, where children and adults enjoyed decorating plant pots and choosing bedding plants to nurture at home. Every pot planted is a small step towards creating greener spaces, encouraging wellbeing, and inspiring a lifelong connection with nature.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated Green Dreams Facilitator, Rita, for leading such a fun and engaging session and helping families grow their confidence alongside their plants.

Your support makes events like these possible, giving local communities the opportunity to learn new skills, improve wellbeing, and experience the many benefits of gardening together.

Huge thank you to Shegrowsveg for the wonderful donation of plants from their stand at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show. 🌱

We transplanted Chard, Nasturtiums and Cosmos at the Ealing Road community allotment, residents from Magellan Court were eager to choose what to plant in their raised beds and the gardening club at Elsley Court benefitted from the abundance of ferns.

Residents will soon be benefiting from weekly gardening sessions led by Billy, our Community Growing Organiser, helping to build confidence, connection and wellbeing through growing together.

We also look forward to welcoming the funding panel from Brent Giving, who will be meeting our residents and lending a hand with some planting. 🌼🌿

🌱 Exciting progress at Wykeham Primary School!
A huge thank you to Brodie Biomass for delivering 5 tonnes of compost/biochar mix, generously sponsored by A Healthier Earth.
The Year 3 gardening class got hands-on with sustainable growing after watching a no-dig vegetable patch tutorial inspired by the free resources from Charles Dowding.
The pupils then created their own vegetable beds by:
🌿 Laying cardboard over the grass to suppress weeds naturally
🌿 Using wheelbarrows, buckets, and spades to transport and spread the compost mix
🌿 Measuring out neat rectangular beds with wooden frames
🌿 Leaving pathways between beds, soon to be covered with woodchip to retain moisture and prevent soil compaction
This is a fantastic example of young people learning practical skills, teamwork, and the importance of healthy soil systems. We can’t wait to see what grows next! 🌱
