Shetland Bereavement Support Service Providing free and confidential, one to one bereavement support, for those living in Shetland who are struggling to cope following a bereavement.

SBSS provides specialist bereavement support for children and adults living in Shetland. The death of a loved one can be devastating and bereavement affects people in different ways - each bereavement is unique, there is no right or wrong way to feel. Emotions can be overwhelming and it can be difficult adjusting to life without the person who has died. Talking and sharing your emotions with a bereavement support worker can give you time and space to work through your grief and feelings.

"I'm not sure what to say?" , "What if I say the wrong thing?" , "What if I can't answer their questions?" , "What if I start to cry in front of them?" πŸ’™. Everyone experiences grief in their own way, and children can jump in and out of their grief. Our memory boxes are packed full of resources to support families to work through their grief together With books, journals, activities and much more, there is something to engage every family member. You are all stars! You have really raised our profile amongst your peers, promoting what we do and why we do it. We were delighted to support the delivery of Shetland's first YPI Scotland final for this academic year at Sandwick Junior High School yesterday.

Well done to all groups and congratulations to the winners Lily, Christina, Georgia and Anthea who convinced the judges with their presentation, securing a Β£3000 grant for Shetland Bereavement Support Service.

Voluntary Action Shetland is the co-delivery partner of YPI in Shetland, working alongside Arven, the Community Partner for the programme locally.

Have you thought about Counselling as a career?? SBSS knows all about the importance of having good counselling support available in Shetland. Having the right support available, at the right time really does make a difference; " I did not expect to gain as much as I did from the sessions, but these have changed me and improved my life forever" (SBSS Client).

Counselling is a rewarding career that involves helping individuals navigate emotional and mental challenges, with various pathways and opportunities for growth. This profession is both meaningful and in demand, with a growing number of roles available across various settings, including schools, hospitals, private practices, and support services.

SBSS actively support students, providing placements for their practical learning. If you are a good listener, can communicate well, have patience and empathy and good problem solving skills you will be well suited to Counselling ❀
