Fun Fact Thursday!

Even though a majority of the water our locomotives use is collected rainwater. Sometimes we have to rely on mains water to see us through the day. And that is thanks to Leatherhead Pumping Station 🏭

Check out it's interesting history below from our friends at Love Leatherhead πŸ‘Œ

Leatherhead Pumping Station may sound like a dry topic (!) but its building on Waterway Road in Leatherhead is impressive.

In 1883 an act was passed that allowed the Leatherhead & District Water Company to build wells and a steam powered pumping station serving as far as Cobham. Municipal waterworks were the solution to cholera outbreaks and providing entire urban populations with safe water.

A year later the Victorian pump building was designed by John William Grover, who designed the roof of the Albert Hall, as well as multiple, global railway works. He was able to use the surrounding chalk aquifer. The steam pumps were coal fired and there were tall chimneys.

In 1927 it was taken over by East Surrey Water (now SES) who went onto expand its service eg. to Effingham. In 1935 the new art deco and modernist building with diesel pumps were installed, which pulled water from Fetcham Millpond uphill to Elmer Water works (for treatment and softening, as it was pulled from hard chalk water) on Hawks Hill. The diesel pumps would have been very loud! The whole building would have been shaking!

Electric pumps were introduced in 1984 and the original pump houses demolished in 1992 (preserving the art deco building we see today). Today the network serves an area of 332 square miles. Elmer Water itself serves (75 square miles) and softens 39 million liters of water a day.
