New research from CRY, presented at the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) Conference 2026, highlights a vital message: heart disease doesn’t discriminate by s*x.

The nationwide study of almost 40,000 young women shows how cardiac screening can detect serious, often hidden conditions - even in those with no symptoms. In fact, 9% of those referred for further checks were diagnosed with conditions linked to sudden cardiac arrest. This reinforces why raising awareness and improving access to screening for young females is so important. Early detection truly can save lives.

A petition created in memory of Nathan Bryan, is pushing for change that could save young lives and would offer cardiac screening to young people when they turn 14. Please sign the petition before it closes on 14 July.

Fund population cardiac screening for every young person when they reach age 14 years. The screening should be undertaken with a review of family history and electrocardiogram (ECG) followed up where necessary with echocardiogram (heart scan).

Thanks to our supporters and families, we held 35 screening days in May with 3,342 young people screened.

CRY's screening events are mostly funded by CRY supporters often in memory of someone who has died from a sudden cardiac death. Help CRY carry out more screening events across the UK by donating, fundraising or sharing this message.
