Fireworks season is approaching. Help us spread the word of the dangers.

Most horse owners already understand the impact fireworks can have on horses, pets and livestock.

🎆 But many people planning a display may not realise that a few simple actions, such as giving advance warning to neighbours, choosing quieter fireworks or considering alternative celebrations, can make a real difference.

That's why we're asking our community to share this post and help raise awareness ahead of fireworks season.

If you're a horse owner, now is also a good time to start preparing:

🐴 Review turnout and management plans
📞 Speak with neighbours and local display organisers
🚧 Check fencing, gates and paddocks
👥 Make sure everyone caring for your horses knows the arrangements

🛑🐴 We need your help! Equestrians are being left out of Active Travel plans. 🐴 🛑

We need your help to change that. The Government is investing in new off-road schemes for walking, wheeling and cycling, but equestrians are too often overlooked. That means many equestrians are still forced onto busy roads despite the need for safer off-road access.

Racehorse owners and trainers – we need your help❗

One of our fundraising riders has had the devastating news the racehorse she was going to ride at our charity race day on Thursday 5 November has fallen through. She's been working incredibly hard over the last 6 months training and raising money for BHS.

We're desperately trying to help her look for a replacement horse! Can you help?

Our rider is a BHS Stage 5 coach with lots of experience riding on the gallops.

The horse would need to meet the following requirements:
⚠️Only licensed horses aged 3+ which have run at least three times under the recognised Rules of Racing are permitted to run.
⚠️All horses to be rated: 0-125 for hurdlers/steeplechasers 0-80 for flat horses.
⚠️All horses taking part in the race must be vaccinated in accordance with the Vaccination Code and a record of these vaccinations must be available. All horses are required to have 6-month Equine Influenza boosters.

A huge congratulations to Keith Richards from Radway Equestrian at Epwell on being named BHS Oxfordshire Centre Coach of the Year!

Keith was presented with his award by BHS Trustee Vicki Hillier and her horse, Joe, in recognition of his dedication, expertise and commitment to helping riders develop their skills and confidence.

A special thank you to Keith for his continued commitment to high-quality coaching and for the positive impact he has on so many riders. This award is a fantastic recognition of all the hard work he puts into supporting horses and people alike.

💥 Baler twine... we all know you can fix anything with it, but did you also know you can easily break things with it? Specifically, things you tie your horse up to or with, or even your horse, if you aren't careful!

💪 Modern big-bale twine can have a breaking strain of up to 500kg, so your horse can do some serious damage before it snaps - I recently saw a horse break the metal tie-ring fitting on a lorry which snapped before the twine, which the owner had put there in good faith believing it would break if needed.

🙏 Please make sure you split your twine down into fewer strands, or use a specialist quick release attachment, and never tie a horse to a full-thickness piece.

BHS and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary Roads Policing Unit are hatching exciting plans for some road safety work on the Island next year. We'd like to identify some "hotspots" for equestrians - roads that you have encountered problems on - so that we can target the right areas in our operations.

Please report all incidents and near-misses (anything where you are passed too fast or too close) via the BHS HorseI app (available free on iOS and Android) to help us build a clear picture. You can report past events too, and we don't need video footage or anything.

(It is really important that incidents are logged on the app to create the stats and evidence we need, so please don't just comment here with road names 🙏)

Congratulations to Amy Robbins Equine - Performance Coach on achieving her BHSI!

✨ B H S I ✨

Four years ago I came to Wellington Riding Official with the aim of completing my Stage 4 and starting my I exams. The journey has been amazing, I have worked incredibly hard but I have been surrounded by the best people to help me succeed. I never thought I would end up actually achieving my goal… and more!

Firstly, the horses. I have fallen in love with the sport all over again.

Secondly Dani Reddan - I came to you in 2022 an unconfident prawn and you have made me what I am today and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Lastly the team at Welly, David Sheerin and Mandy Chaffin thank you so much for your encouragement and support right up to those last-minute pep talks! Sofia Turian for being my absolute rock and the person I can always rely on for help. Everyone who has let me ride their horses at the yard and Highfield, the team and coaches who have always supported me. THANK YOU ✨🙌
