Top Tip Tuesday - Hot weather has arrived! Here’s how to help your horse stay comfortable ☀️

With temperatures expected to rise across the UK this week, now is a good time to check your horse’s hot weather care.

A few simple steps can make a big difference:
💧 Make sure your horse always has access to clean, fresh water. A 500kg horse may drink 50–70 litres (4-6 buckets) a day in hot weather.
🌳 Provide shade or shelter, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
🪰 Help protect against flies with fly masks, repellents and regular poo-picking.
🧴 Use sun protection for horses with pink skin or white/grey hair, especially their noses.
🌡️ Know the signs that your horse may be struggling, including lethargy, dark urine, reduced droppings, fast breathing, nostril flaring, or slow recovery after exercise.

If you think your horse may be showing signs of heat-related illness, contact your vet immediately. Move them into shade, offer water, and begin cooling by continuously applying cold water over their body while help is on the way.

⭐ Star Series: Meet Milly ⭐

Hi! I’m Milly, a 27-year-old rider from Devon and I am a member of Sid and Otter Valley Riding Club. I have two Warmblood mares, Arya (7) and Una (15)

Arya introduced me to Riding Club life when we joined Sid and Otter and attended our first camp together in 2024. Sadly six months later, she retired to a happy hacking life following a field injury.

Late in the summer of 2024, Una came to me on loan from my best friend and she has been everything I could have wished for and more. Together, we've enjoyed Riding Club clinics, dressage, show jumping and arena eventing.

A highlight of this year was competing in the Arena Eventing Qualifiers at Bicton as part of a team. We qualified for the Championships at Aston-le-Walls where we went on to finish 1st as a team. It was a dream come true and one of the proudest moments of my riding career. Being part of a Riding Club team and celebrating everyone's success made it even more special.

I love being part of Sid and Otter Valley Riding Club and have lots of clinics and events to look forward to. My goal for the rest of the year is to continue competing as part of club teams and see where the journey takes us next!

Be alert: equine flu cases are rising in the UK.

Recent reports show a sudden increase in equine influenza outbreaks this month. A reminder of how quickly this highly contagious illness can spread.

Knowing the signs and acting quickly can help protect your horse and others on your yard.

Look out for:
🌡️ A temperature above 38.5°C
🐴 A frequent dry, harsh cough
💧 Nasal discharge
🥕 Loss of appetite
💤 Lethargy
🩺 Swollen or painful glands around the jaw
🌾 Gagging when eating

If you notice any of these signs, isolate your horse straight away and contact your vet promptly.

📲 Download the BHS poster and share it on your yard to help everyone take simple steps to prevent the spread of disease ➡️ https://bit.ly/4fqaxlk

💡 Top Tip Tuesday - Emergency care planning

While no one wants to think about what you’d do in an emergency, it’s much easier to stay calm and pragmatic knowing you have previously thought through your options.

Our emergency care plan takes you through key aspects to consider when faced with an emergency - particularly around finances, insurance and emergency transport. This is particularly important around colic as early action can greatly improve the outcome for your horse, so considering whether surgery is a viable option.

Many thanks to Lois Unitt, BHS Horse Care & Welfare Education Officer for today's tip. Keep an eye out on Tuesdays for more useful tips from British Riding Clubs Head Office!🙌🏽

🎉We have reached the halfway point in the 2026 BRC Championship season and the league table has been updated following the Arena Eventing Championships🎉

Saffron Walden have extended their lead, but many new names have joined them in the top 10. Across all the winter championships, 75 clubs have recorded at least one top-three finish.

👀Want to see your club climb the leaderboard? Find out about the summer qualifiers going on in your area on our website!

Please note the leaderboard includes both team and individual top 3 results in BRC Championship classes (it DOES NOT include individual arena placings - overall individuals ONLY). Where there is a tie in overall top 3 placings, team placings take priority over individual results for the final leaderboard! ⭐
