Introductory message from Peter Maxwell, Hereford City Rotary Club President 2022/23. Welcome to Hereford City Rotary Club
We are part of the world’s largest Service Club organization which was founded at the beginning of the 20th Century and now has over 1.4 million members spread through over 46,000 clubs in some 250 countries. As members we are a network of neighbours, friends, leaders, and pro

blem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. We transform communities through the 47million volunteer hours that we contribute each year. In addition, in 2020-2021 we gave grants to the tune of 275 million pounds to global service initiatives to help fund sustainable community projects. Our motto is “People of Action” and as such we tackle challenges at home and abroad in our cause:
:
• Promoting Peace
• Fighting Disease
• Providing Clean Water
• Supporting Education
• Saving Mothers and Children
• Growing Local Economies
• Supporting the Environment

Here in Hereford, the Hereford City Rotary Club is an active club of over 20 members who straddle various age ranges – from the actively employed, to businesses owners – to those who are retired. UKRAINE SPEAKER

Our Club was delighted to welcome Rotarian Will Jackson earlier in April to give us the up to date situation on the war being waged by Russia against Ukraine. Will is Rotary Great Britain and Ireland Ukraine team member, Rotary District 1100 Lead for Ukraine, and Honorary member of the Rotary Club Ukraine Unity, as well as a member of Hereford Elgar Rotary.

His presentation was impactful, emotional and moving as he told of the very real brutality of the Russian forces, and he brought alive the suffering endured by the Ukrainian people.

Our members will be fundraising to support Ukraine during the month of May.

At our meeting on 13 April we were delighted to have two new members join Hereford City Rotary.

Paulette joins us as a Full Member and Sasha as an Honorary Member. Both bring a range of different experiences to the Club, and we are sure that they will enjoy volunteering with us in support of others who are less fortunate at home and abroad.

A huge WELCOME to both of our new members!

MUHEZA HOSPICE CARE

Our Club members were delighted to welcome Dr Karilyn Collins MBE to our meeting on 9 March, when Karilyn gave a wonderful talk about her work in Muheza in Tanzania.
Karilyn was awarded the MBE in 2011 for services to palliative care in Tanzania. She recognised the lack of palliative care available while working in Tanzania from 2001 and founded Muheza Hospice Care, providing HIV testing and counselling and outpatient palliative care at the Diana Centre at Teule Hospital (now St Augustine's Hospital), as well as setting up a home visit service, and providing palliative care training for the staff and local community. The charity has continued to expand over the years, and functions as an essential service for its patients and their families.
We are pleased to be able to support the 25th Anniversary Appeal Campaign to ensure the sustainability of the services provided, and Rotarian Steve from our International Team is pictured presenting a cheque to Karilyn.

SUPPORTING ST. AUGUSTINE'S SCHOOL IN TANZANIA

Recently we were delighted to be able to support the Porridge Project for St Augustine's School in Tanzania with a donation, which means that the students can have a breakfast on arrival in the mornings. This helps to fuel their interest and attention, so that they are ready to learn. Many of them will not have been able to eat before leaving for school. One of our members is Steve, who has visited the school recently and has seen at first hand the beneficial effect of the funding. Some very happy faces in the photo received from the school!

DISTRICT 1100 FINAL ROTARY 'YOUTH SPEAKS' A DEBATE

The District Final of our 'Youth Speaks' competition took place on 28 February at Churchdown Community Centre in Gloucester and was organised by Cotswold Tyndale and Hereford City Rotary Clubs. The day saw some fantastic debates by both the Intermediate and Senior Teams with public speaking on display at an outstanding level, and Peter Maxwell as our MC kept the day's programme firmly on track.

The Intermediate winners are: Redmaids' High School in Bristol.
Runners up: Monmouth Comprehensive School.

The Senior winners are: Katharine Lady Berkeley's School in Wotton-under-Edge.
Runners up: Redmaids' High School.

Our independent judges Caroline, Naomi and Sarah from the Malvern Speakers group did a sterling job for the students throughout the day and provided excellent feedback after the results were announced.

The prizes and certificates were presented by Anne Bartholomew our District Governor, who congratulated all the students who took part for their commitment, motivation and ambition.
