Summer in Almeley 🌱

This summer we’re inviting people across the parish to explore local wildlife, discover new places, share ideas and celebrate the community around us.

Whether you’re joining us at the Village Fete, hunting for mini-beasts in St Mary’s Churchyard, or taking part in conversations about the future of our countryside, we hope you’ll find something to inspire you.

Nature. Community. Resilience.

Take a look at our upcoming events and come and join us.

Allotment Discussion Part 2

Evening everyone,

Firstly, sorry for the radio silence since our last post. Between work, family life and trying to organise a few upcoming events, time seems to have disappeared! Surely we can’t be the only ones feeling like there’s never enough hours in the day? 😅

It did get us thinking though…

With so much going on in life, how valuable is it to have something local that helps people switch off for a bit, get outdoors and connect with others?

That’s what keeps bringing us back to the idea of a community allotment.

The comments on our last post were really interesting, and we’d like to take the conversation a step further.

If we were to arrange an informal meeting for anyone interested in exploring the idea:

Would you come along?

Where do we even start?

Who would need to be involved?

What benefits do you think it could bring to the community?

Would you be interested in helping get something off the ground?

We’re not saying this is definitely happening, we’re just trying to gauge interest and understand what’s involved before taking any next steps.

Whether you’ve had an allotment before, know someone who has, or just like the idea of having a shared community space, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Looking forward to hearing your views.

We carried out our first butterfly survey at Meer Common today and captured this beauty on camera. We will be following the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme format of walking the same route once a week until October. Want to get involved? Drop a note in the comments 🦋

Good evening, all.
We’ve been chatting a lot lately about the idea of community allotments and whether it’s something that could really benefit the area.
Some people love the idea of growing food, meeting others, and creating a shared space -others have probably seen the challenges that come with it too.

So we wanted to ask: what are your thoughts and experiences? Have you ever been involved in a community allotment before? Did it work well? Would you support something like this locally?
Genuinely interested to hear people’s views and ideas. Please post your thoughts below

Great opportunity for meadow flower identification on Hopley's Green Common atm - I could see 12 in this small patch alone - how many species can you find? The one in the close-up is burnet-saxifrage not often found in Herefordshire but very nutritious for sheep and cattle apparently, so the hay from Hopley's Green must be well good!
