The Ridley Eye Foundation We are a charity who delivers the cure for cataract blindness.

Our work funds the provision and clinical development of cataract surgery in developing countries to treat avoidable blindness.

Meet the people behind the mission 💙

In 2016 Shirin was in Nepal helping rebuild after the earthquake. Three years later she started volunteering with the Ridley Eye Foundation, alongside her day job as a dental practice manager in Lincolnshire.

Today she's our Director of Operations. She works with our teams in the UK and Nepal to organise the surgical outreach clinics, so that people in remote villages can get cataract surgery that would otherwise be out of reach, whether because of cost or distance.

Every clinic, every screening and every restored sight starts with our team working together.

Cataracts can affect people of all ages. They can be congenital, caused by injury, linked to diabetes, exposure to sunlight and smoke as well as age and lifestyle.

That's why everyone should have access to eye health care. Spotting a problem early can save someone's sight.

Some of the villages we reach sit high in the mountains of Nepal and have no eye care services. So we go to them.

At each surgical outreach clinic we aim to screen 1000 people. Free cataract surgery, medications and glasses are given to those in need and by the end of the week people who arrived unable to see are able to return home with their vision and independence restored.

For some communities in Nepal, accessing eye care can mean travelling far beyond their local community and home.

Above 2,000 metres, rough roads, landslides and difficult terrain can make remote villages incredibly hard to reach. Temporary outreach clinics require several days of bumpy jeep rides and trekking to transport the essential medical equipment and supplies to the clinic location

It’s a reminder of just how important it is to take eye care to the communities that need it most.

Eye care isn’t just for older people. 👁️

Working with our partners, we help screen and support people of all ages with a range of eye health issues. Younger patients can be assessed at outreach clinics and if treatment is needed that cannot be provided at the outreach clinic, patients are supported to access free treatment in a base hospital

A Ridley supported outreach clinic, by the numbers. 👁️

Over a four or five day clinic, we aim to screen up to 1,000 patients. On average, around 10% of those triaged are selected for free cataract surgerys, highlighting just how important accessible eye care is in these communities.

Every screening is a step towards identifying problems earlier and helping more people access the treatment they need.
