Meta AI Glasses: Changing Lives, Not Just Taking Pictures

For many people, these aren’t simply “smart glasses”. They’re an assistive technology that can provide greater confidence, independence and access to the world around them. Meta itself highlights the particular value of these hands-free capabilities to blind and low-vision users. (Facebook)
But we also need to talk about the negative image.
We’re increasingly seeing media coverage and public discussion portray people wearing camera-equipped smart glasses as suspicious or even dangerous.
Yes, privacy matters. People should know when cameras are being used, and technology must be used responsibly.
But there’s a very important distinction between misusing technology and using technology to overcome barriers caused by visual impairment.
When someone with a visual impairment wears Meta AI Glasses, they may be using them to read a menu, identify an object, understand their surroundings, contact a volunteer or simply navigate their day with greater independence.
They shouldn’t have to worry that other people automatically see them as suspicious because of the technology they’re wearing.
We shouldn’t allow the misuse of a technology to create a stigma around the people who rely on it.
