🛟 Crew Training Update ⚓️

Over the last five weeks, our volunteer lifeboat crew at RNLI Fleetwood have been undertaking intensive training, both afloat and ashore.

Two of our volunteers have travelled to the RNLI College in Poole. New volunteer crew member Edward Donleavy attended the Crew Emergency Procedures course at the RNLI Sea Survival Centre, while volunteer crew member and Social Media Officer Rob Baines attended the RNLI Communications course for Lifeboat Press Officers and Social Media Officers.

Back at the station, our inshore D-class and all-weather Shannon class lifeboat crews have been out on the water with our RNLI Coastal Trainers, undertaking training exercises and assessments.

Our volunteer shore crew and Launch Authorities have also been carrying out shore-based training, with the following crew members successfully completing their assessments and passing out:

• Dave Smith – ILB Shore Crew and Plant Operator
• Emma Roney – ILB Shore Crew and Plant Operator
• Nathan Hackney – Plant Operator Revalidation
• Dave Bowell – Plant Operator
• Dan Smith – Short Range Radio Certificate
• Sam Catterall – Short Range Radio Certificate
• Andrew Wilson – ILB Shore Crew
• Paul Buckley – ILB Tier 1
• Rob Bennett – Launch Authority and Plant Operator

Alongside these pass-outs, a significant amount of targeted development training was delivered for trainee Coxswains, Mechanics, Navigators and Crew.

RNLI Coastal Trainer Ben McGarry said:

"The varied training provided valuable opportunities to develop practical skills, decision-making, communication and teamwork. It was particularly encouraging to see individuals stepping forward to take on new responsibilities and challenge themselves in unfamiliar situations."

Thank you to everyone that braved the stormy weather last night, to join Stormy Stan and our volunteer fundraisers at the Ferry Cafe for our RNLI Fleetwood lifeboat stations Fish Friday Supper.
The fundraising event raised £666.50, for our charity to help our RNLI volunteer crews continue saving lives at sea.

We would also like to thank Steve and all his staff at The Ferry Cafe for hosting our fundraising event and the tasty fish and chips.

🕑It’s that time of year again! Time for pumpkin spiced everything, small children mugging us for sweeties and a whole bunch of us being mildly confused over the next few days, as the clocks go back at 2am Sunday morning marking the official end of British Summer Time.

This does have one extra effect for our charity's RNLI volunteers: everyone’s pulling overtime tonight and we’ll be ready if you need us all twenty-FIVE hours of tomorrow!!!

⚠️Storm Austen and Boelo
Unfortunately we have had to make the decision to close our RNLI station shop for the next few days, this is due to the stormy conditions and to keep our shop volunteers and supporters safe.

Our station shop will be closed for the remainder of the weekend and we hope to reopen next week.

If you are heading to the coast this weekend?
Here are some important safety tips.

● Always Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

● Check the weather and tide times before you set out.

● Stay away from big waves and the edge of cliffs when the wind picks up. If you need to lean into the wind it's time to move away from the cliffs, and if you can feel the spray from a big wave you’re too close.

● Avoid the temptation of getting that awesome weather selfie. Remember that the pros are taking their pictures with a long lens from a safe distance, usually approximately a quarter of a mile away or more using a telephoto lens.

● Carry a mobile phone with you in case you need to call for assistance and make sure it's charged.

● Remember ‘Float to Live’:

● If you see someone in trouble,
call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don't risk becoming a casualty yourself.
