Today, we’re shining a spotlight on our unpaid carers and care partners at The Eric Liddell Community.

During this Carers Week, our carers have been celebrating with multiple activities. On Tuesday, a group of carers visited Dr Neil’s Garden for an afternoon of games and a walk around the gardens. Yesterday, two All Aboard canal barge trips were organised, and even the rain did not dampen the fun.

To finish this week of celebrations, we will be hosting a Tea Dance for them later today.

This Carers Week, we would like to celebrate everyone who cares for another, helping create lasting memories and providing the highest quality of life possible. Thank you for everything that you do!

What a truly special day at The Eric Liddell Community! ✨

Today, our Day Care room was transformed into an intimate theatre as we proudly hosted a performance of Love Letter to a City, a beautiful new monologue written by our wonderful Patron, Sir Alexander McCall Smith. (Alexander McCall Smith)

We were absolutely thrilled to have Sir Alexander McCall Smith himself sitting in the audience alongside our Day Care clients to watch this incredible piece, described as "a tender portrait of love and youth in 1990s Edinburgh, set against the backdrop of a changing world." 💛

This unforgettable experience was part of the brilliant ‘Lyceum at Home’ project. To mark their 60th anniversary, The Lyceum () is bringing theatre directly to the people of Edinburgh. We are so honoured to be one of just 30 hosts selected from over 100 applications to bring this theatrical magic straight to our community!

A huge thank you to The Lyceum and Sir Alexander McCall Smith for sharing this gift with us. Swipe to see some of the smiles and highlights from this afternoon! 📸🎭

Today, we’re sharing a quote from one of our Day Care Volunteers, Lorraine:

"I volunteer at ELC as there is a great community spirit. The staff are amazing and organise a wide range of activities so that every day care session is different. Everyone joins in, and we all come home smiling."

Thank you to all our volunteers for the difference they make every day. 💙

Today, we’re sharing a quote from one of our Befriending Service volunteers:
"I volunteer for The Eric Liddell Community because it allows me, as a befriender, to provide flexible and practical support to a carer. I believe this support is appreciated, and knowing that I can make a positive difference is personally very rewarding."

Thank you to all our volunteers for the difference they make every day. 💙

Fascinating new research highlighted by the BBC News shows how living human brain tissue is helping scientists better understand the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease and accelerate the search for new treatments.

This work builds on pioneering research led by Dr Claire Durrant at The University of Edinburgh, who recently spoke at our Dementia Awareness event about the potential of using living human brain tissue to uncover how dementia develops and improve our understanding of the changes that occur in the brain during the earliest stages of the disease.

Aidan McAllister gave permission for doctors to take a part of his healthy brain matter to use for dementia research.

Our community have been having fun in the sun. Some of the wellbeing walkers popped into for an ice cream. The poetry group sat in The Eric Liddell Community secret garden to discuss their poems, including one written by a carer on their recent visit to Durham with Eric’s Escapes.
