🌱🍓 Grow Some Summer Magic with Your Kids! 🍅🌻
Looking for a fun, hands-on way to keep the kids busy this summer? Why not try planting your own fruits and veggies together! It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, learn something new, and maybe even sneak a few extra greens onto the plate 😉
Here are some of the easiest fruits & veg to grow at home in the UK this summer, plus when and how to plant them:
🍓 Strawberries
📅 Plant: April–June
🪴 How: Use pots or hanging baskets, place in a sunny spot, and water regularly. You’ll get sweet berries in just a few weeks!
🥕 Carrots
📅 Plant: April–July
🌱 How: Sow seeds directly into soil or deep pots. Keep soil moist and be patient—kids will love pulling them up like hidden treasure!
🍅 Cherry Tomatoes
📅 Plant: May–June (after last frost)
☀️ How: Plant in pots or grow bags, keep in a sunny area, and water often. Support with a small cane as they grow.
🥬 Lettuce
📅 Plant: April–August
💧 How: Sprinkle seeds in shallow soil or containers, water lightly, and harvest in just a few weeks—perfect for quick results!
🌿 Herbs (Mint, Basil, Chives)
📅 Plant: May–July
🪴 How: Grow in small pots on a windowsill or outside. Easy to care for and great for adding flavour to meals.
💸 FREE & Low-Cost Ways to Get Started (and save money later!):
♻️ Reuse yoghurt pots, egg cartons, or old buckets as plant pots
🌱 Grow from scraps: try lettuce bases, spring onion roots, or herb cuttings
🤝 Swap seeds or seedlings with neighbours and friends in the community
🍓 Use runners from existing strawberry plants to grow new ones for free
🌧️ Collect rainwater to keep your plants hydrated without extra cost
Not only is this a fun family activity, but it also helps cut down on food costs once your crops are ready to harvest—plus you know exactly where your food comes from 🌍
🌞 Make it fun!
Let kids decorate their own plant pots
Give each plant a name (yes, even the carrots!)
Create a simple watering routine together
Celebrate harvest day with a homemade salad or snack
Whether you have a big garden or just a few pots on a balcony, growing food together is a wonderful way to build memories, encourage self-sufficiency, and enjoy fresh, homegrown produce 🌿
