Never seen Shakespeare before?
You’re not alone… and honestly, you’re exactly who this is for.

If the thought of Shakespeare brings up memories of confusing language, school essays, or feeling like everyone else “gets it” but you don’t… this is your sign that it doesn’t need to be like that.

Because Shakespeare was never meant to feel like a test.
It was meant to be watched. Heard. Laughed at. Gasped at. Enjoyed.

At its heart, Twelfth Night is a story about love, mistaken identity, mischief, and chaos in the best possible way. It’s human, funny, and surprisingly easy to follow once it’s alive in front of you.
You don’t need to “understand Shakespeare” to enjoy it. You just need to turn up.

And the truth is, most people don’t come in knowing every word. They come in curious... and leave surprised at how much they understood without even trying.

MEET MARIA
Sharp-witted, resourceful, and never far from the action, Maria is Olivia's trusted maid and one of the cleverest people in Illyria. She may be small in stature, but she more than makes up for it with her quick thinking and mischievous sense of humour.
When Malvolio's pompous behaviour becomes too much to bear, Maria devises a prank that sets off one of the play's most hilarious storylines.
Loyal, lively, and always one step ahead, Maria proves that brains and wit are a match for anyone.
We're delighted to introduce Maria, played by the marvellous Louise Ware

MEET ORSINO
The Duke of Illyria, Orsino is a hopeless romantic who is deeply in love with Olivia, or at least with the idea of being in love. Passionate, poetic, and prone to dramatic declarations, he spends his days dreaming of romance and sending messages of devotion.
But when his new servant, Cesario, enters his household, Orsino finds himself sharing his deepest thoughts and discovering that love may not be quite what he imagined.
Charming, emotional, and endlessly romantic, Orsino is at the heart of Shakespeare's tale of love and mistaken identity.

Perfect date night?

Picture this: a summer evening in the beautiful surroundings of the Italian Gardens, Eastbourne… the sun softening, a gentle breeze through the trees, and you and your favourite person settling in for a night of theatre under the open sky.
This is not your usual night out.

It’s laughter, drama, and romance woven together in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night — a story full of mistaken identities, longing, and joy, performed live in one of the most atmospheric outdoor settings.

Whether it’s a first date, a long-standing love, or just an excuse to do something a little different together, this is the kind of evening that feels special from the moment you arrive.

And you don’t need to worry about the practical bits — seating is provided and undercover, so you can sit back comfortably whatever the evening brings. Performances will go ahead in light rain, and there’s a refreshments tent on site with drinks and cakes if you fancy making the most of the interval.
The only thing left to decide is… who are you bringing with you?

Getting Here – Parking, Travel & Accessibility Information�
We can’t wait to welcome you to the beautiful Italian Gardens for an evening of Shakespeare under the open sky ✨
To help you plan your visit, here’s everything you need to know:

Parking�There is free parking available nearby, including on-street parking in the surrounding Holywell and Meads area.�Spaces can be limited on busy evenings, so we recommend allowing extra time to find a spot and enjoy a short scenic walk down to the Gardens.

Travel & Arrival�The Italian Gardens are tucked just below Helen Gardens, close to Holywell Beach.�It’s a short walk from the promenade, and also accessible via the seafront if you’re arriving on foot or enjoying the coastal path.

Accessibility�Please note the Gardens are between the road and the seafront, so some paths are steep and uneven.�There is a gentler access route from the promenade, which we recommend for anyone who prefers a less steep descent.�If you have any accessibility questions, we’re very happy to help before your visit.

Before you arrive�The seating area is undercover, so performances will go ahead in light rain — just bring a layer if the evening turns cool.

Make a night of it�Our refreshment tent will be open throughout the evening serving drinks and a delicious selection of cakes.

We recommend arriving a little early, settling in, and enjoying the magic of the gardens before the performance begins.
