The Speech Language Communication Company

The Speech Language Communication Company Our Scottish registered charity supports children who experience difficulties and disabilities related to speech, language and communication.

Our aims are:
To help develop speech and language for children and young people — making sure every child can access quality support when they need it. To support families: children, parents, carers, siblings, grandparents — making sure everyone gains confidence, opportunities and key skill. To promote the rights and social inclusion of children — making sure families are informed and included.

To be a key contributor to the Inclusive Communication national agenda — making sure the voices of children and families are heard. To be a reliable, effective and flexible source of support — making sure we are the best we can be.

Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) may have a higher level of understanding than their expressive language suggests.

A child may understand concepts and ideas but struggle to organise language, find words, or communicate effectively with others. This gap between understanding and expression can impact learning, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing if not appropriately supported.

Targeted support can help reduce these barriers and improve participation and outcomes.

⭐️ Volunteer's Week ⭐️

We are very grateful for our all of our volunteers who contribute so much to our services. Thank you to all who volunteer with us for your warmth, dedication, and the support you offer to families.

We really could not do this without you!

Meet two of our volunteers, Becca & Kaeley.

Becca has volunteered with SLCo since October 2025.
Every Monday morning she brings a helping hand in running our under 5's session, ensuring the routines are able to flow.
Being relatable and using a friendly manner, Becca spends time engaging with parents & carers to help everyone feel welcome.
By treating children as individuals, Becca creates an environment where true potential’s are recognised and can be achieved.

Kaeley has volunteered her time to join our weekly Chill Club as a club assistant since August 2025.
Kaeley brings an empathetic approach with curiosity which enables her to create connections with our young people to help them be supported during our sessions.
Within our team Kaeley helps us to think deeper about what we observe at our club and ensure that our activities and planning are person centred.

“Volunteering with SLCo means a lot to me. I’m really grateful to be part of such a brilliant team. The highlight for me is seeing the young people grow in confidence, express themselves, build genuine friendships and enjoy being part of a group where they can truly be themselves.”

🔍 Myth.

While some children may make natural progress over time, many children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) need targeted support to develop their communication skills. Without the right help, difficulties can continue and may impact learning, friendships, and emotional wellbeing.

Early identification and support can make a significant difference.

💙 Communication Changes Lives

A child who can communicate effectively is more likely to build friendships, participate in learning, express their needs, and develop confidence.

For many children with speech, language and communication needs, these everyday experiences can be challenging without the right support.

At SLCo, we see first-hand how early intervention, inclusive opportunities, and tailored support can help children and young people develop the skills they need to thrive.

Every new word, every conversation, every friendship, and every moment of confidence matters.

Together with families, schools, and communities, we're working to ensure that every child has the opportunity to be heard, understood, and included.

💬 What communication milestone are you celebrating with a child or young person this week?

🗣️ 3 Signs Your Child May Need Speech Support

1️⃣ They become frustrated when trying to communicate

2️⃣ They struggle to follow instructions or understand language

3️⃣ Their speech is difficult for others to understand

Every child develops communication skills at their own pace, but if you have concerns, seeking support early can make a big difference to their confidence, learning, and social connections. 💙

At SLCo, we're here to help children and families develop the skills they need to thrive.

Early help for children with SLCN is about more than learning in the classroom — it supports confidence, friendships, communication, and emotional wellbeing. 💬
At SLCo, we work alongside families, schools, and communities to help every child access the right support to thrive.

We believe that the voice of every child should be heard.

Some children with SLCN are working much harder to communicate than it appears on the surface.

They may understand what is being said, but struggle to find words, build sentences, or make themselves understood. This can sometimes be mistaken for inattention or behaviour, when in fact it is a communication need.

When we identify this early and respond with the right support, we can help children feel understood, included, and confident to participate.

Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) can sometimes feel overwhelmed by too many questions during conversations and play. A simple but highly effective strategy is to comment more than you question.

Instead of asking:
❓ “What colour is that?”
❓ “What are you building?”
❓ “Where is the car going?”

Try commenting:
🗨️ “You’re building a huge tower.”
🗨️ “That car is going really fast.”
🗨️ “I can see the blue block.”

Comments provide children with strong language models without putting them under pressure to respond immediately. This supports confidence, understanding, and more natural communication opportunities.

Small changes in adult communication can make a big difference for children with SLCN.

🏅 Congratulations to Kenneth, one of our Edinburgh Youth Club Assistants, on completing his very first marathon in support of SLCo!

What an incredible achievement! We’re so proud to have team members who inspire our young people to believe in themselves, challenge their limits, and aim high.

Please join us in congratulating him on this fantastic accomplishment 👏
