❤OXYTOCIN aka the love hormone ❤

❤ New babies have a strong need to be close to their parents, as this helps them to feel secure and loved.

❤ When babies feel secure, they release a hormone called oxytocin. This acts like a fertiliser for their growing brain, helping them to be happy babies and more confident children and adults.

❤ Holding, smiling and talking to your baby also releases oxytocin in you, which helps you to feel calm and happy.

❤ Oxytocin helps both parent and baby to feel calm and happy and helps boost baby’s brain development.

❤Helps form a bond between mother and baby.

❤It is what mother & baby secrete when you cuddle your child, breastfeed and give
birth.

❤It reduces stress levels.

❤It reduces pain sensitivity.

❤It has an effect on our general health by lowering our blood pressure and boosting our immune systems.

❤Breastfeeding stimulates the release of oxytocin into your system which will cause the muscles in your breast to contract allowing the let down of your milk to occur

How breastfeeding helps you as a mum

💕 Lower cancer risk

Breastfeeding helps protect your health long‑term.
The longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

❤️ Heart and diabetes protection

Mothers who breastfeed are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and high blood
pressure later in life.

🤍 Recovery after birth

Breastfeeding releases hormones that help your womb shrink back, reduce bleeding,
and support bonding and emotional wellbeing.
It boosts your oxytocin and dopamine levels which helps to lowers the stress hormone
(cortisol), reduces blood pressure, and decreases anxiety and fear. It helps you feel
calmer and more relaxed.
How breastfeeding benefits your baby

🛡️ Protection from infections

Babies who are breastfed are much less likely to be admitted to hospital with tummy
bugs, chest infections or ear infections, especially in the first year of life.

🌙 Safer sleep

Breastfeeding greatly reduces the risk of cot death (SIDS). Research has shown that
any amount of breastfeeding helps.

🌱 Health now and in the future

Breastfed babies are less likely to develop obesity and diabetes as they grow older.
🩸 Serious illnesses

Children who were breastfed are less likely to develop some rare but serious
illnesses, including certain childhood cancers.

💩 Gentle on little tummies

Breastmilk is easy to digest and helps babies develop a healthy gut, which supports
their immune system.

Breastfeeding is a powerful, natural way to support a baby’s growth and
immunity while promoting maternal health and strengthening emotional bonds.

🧡Breastfeeding provides everything your baby needs for the first 6 months of life. After 6 months babies need food as well as milk, but breast milk is still important during the first 2 years of your baby's life and beyond.
💚Breast milk stops babies from getting ill and developing certain health conditions.
🩵Breast milk changes to meet your baby's needs as they develop, and can respond to their surroundings to protect them from germs and bugs.
💛Research shows that breastfeeding can also help boost your mental health, and the mental wellbeing of your baby too.
💜Beyond the early years, breast milk also improves brain development and your baby's future health by reducing their chances of conditions such as asthma, diabetes and obesity.

Today we highlight the Value of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a powerful, natural way to support a baby’s growth and immunity while promoting maternal health and strengthening emotional bonds. Its benefits extend beyond the family to society as a whole. Breastfeeding is more than just feeding.

Benefits for Baby (some, not all of them!)

🧡Optimal nutrition: Breast milk contains the perfect balance of nutrients tailored to your baby’s needs.

💚Immunity protection: Rich in antibodies, it helps protect against infections (e.g.,
respiratory illnesses, diarrhoea, ear infections).

💛Brain development: Supports cognitive development and may improve learning
outcomes.

Benefits for the mother (some, not all of them!)

🩵Physical recovery: Helps the uterus contract and reduces postnatal bleeding.

🩷Reduced disease risk: Lowers the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Breast milk responds directly to your baby’s needs. Breast milk is always ready, safe, and made specifically for your baby's needs

🌟Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Early Learning Scheme🌟

The vision is for Scotland to become a breastfeeding friendly society, valuing breastfeeding and supporting mothers and babies to breastfeed wherever and whenever they wish.

The Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Early Learning Scheme was created to support nurseries and early years settings to:

🧡promote a breastfeeding friendly environment
💛support families and colleagues who breastfeed
🩵learn more about the benefits of breastfeeding

We also encourage settings to:

💚adopt a Breastfeeding and Returning to Work policy to assure pregnant and breastfeeding employees that should they wish to, they will be supported to continue breastfeeding on return to work.
🩷be aware of local services where breastfeeding families can access support and information and to signpost families to this support if desired.

Are you an early years setting interested in signing up to the scheme?
Contact [email protected] for more information.
