This week is East Lothian Carers Week, a chance to recognise and celebrate the millions of unpaid carers across the UK.

Dunbar ASN was founded by parent-carers in 2020 and continues to be run by parent-carers today. Every one of our trustees understands first-hand what it means to support a child or family member with additional or complex needs in many different forms, often while juggling work, family life, endless appointments & advocacy, as well as everything else that comes with caring.

Being a carer can be incredibly rewarding: We get to witness our children reaching milestones in their own way, and celebrate achievements that others might overlook. We get to recieve love from them in ways that others may never have the honour of experiencing.

But we also know the challenges: The exhaustion. The isolation. The pressures of society. The constant planning, adapting, and advocating that often happens behind the scenes.

Supporting parents & carers has always been at the heart of what we do. Whether through our in-person support groups, family sessions, community events or our Facebook group - we never want carers to feel like they are alone.

We also want to recognise the young carers in our community. Many children and young people take on caring responsibilities for siblings, parents and family members, often without others realising. We see you, and we appreciate everything you do ❤️

This Carers Week, we want to say thank you to every carer in our community. Your role matters, your experiences matter, and you deserve support too.

Our next Parent & Carers Support Group meets at Dunbar Library, Bleachingfield at 9.30am on Friday 12th of June. Everyone is welcome!

💛Volunteers Week 2026 💛

As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who gives their time, patience, and compassion to support our families.

Your understanding, willingness to adapt and meet children where they are, matters more than you know. You help create safe, welcoming spaces where parents feel supported and children can simply be themselves. 💛 We are so grateful for you.

As our group continues to grow, we’re also looking for a few more volunteers who share our values of inclusion, equity, community and empowerment. If you’d like to get involved we’d love to hear from you, contact [email protected].

Together, we can keep building a community where no one feels alone.

💛Volunteers Week 2026 💛

Today we hear from one of our trustees, Amy who works behind the scenes on our communications as well as many other things.

“I became a volunteer with Dunbar ASN Community Collective last year, having used their services for about 18 months prior to that.

Unfortunately, we had been let down by all the usual avenues of support, and our family was in a desperate state, looking for anyone who could help or relate to what we were going through.

We were welcomed with open arms, given not only support, advice & guidance, but a safe space to be who we are & a real sense of belonging.

As a volunteer, I hope to pay it forward and give back to other families what the Dunbar ASN Community Collective has given us.”

💛Volunteers Week 2026💛

Today we hear from one of our trustees Cheryl about the importance of giving back through volunteering.

"Volunteering for Dunbar asn means to me giving back to a local charity who helped me 3 years ago when I first heard about them and started going along to the meet ups and also connecting with them all as they are all supportive and there when you need anything"

💛Volunteers Week 2026 💛

Today we hear from Emma, our chairperson as she reflects on volunteers week.

"I started volunteering when I was 15 with the WRVS, not knowing it would become such a steady thread through my life. Later, I spent ten happy years as a Beaver Leader with the 6th Leith Scouts, watching young people grow in confidence and find their place.

When my family moved to Dunbar, that same pull towards community brought me to Dunbar ASN in 2021. I became one of the founding trustees, but more importantly, I found friendships, connection, a sense of purpose and support for my son.

What I love most is the people, the parents, carers, volunteers, and especially the young people who come to our sessions. Seeing their confidence grow, watching friendships form, and being part of a space where everyone can simply be themselves means more than I can say.

Volunteering has given me so much over the years. This week, I’m just feeling grateful for every moment, every smile, and every person who makes our community what it is."

Our Parent and Carers Support Group is at Dunbar Library this Friday from 9:30am.

Why come along?
You don’t have to do this alone. If you're a parent or carer of a child with additional or complex needs.

Diagnosed or not, early in the journey or years in, this space is for you.

Twice a month, we gather in Dunbar to connect, share, and support one another.

It’s relaxed, friendly, and full of heart.

What you’ll find:
• Real conversations with people who get it
• Practical info and guidance without the jargon
• A chance to breathe, reflect, and build confidence
• A community that celebrates your family’s resilience

Whether you’re navigating school meetings, waiting lists, or just trying to get through the week, come as you are. You’ll be met with warmth, understanding, and a cuppa.

Open to families in Dunbar and the surrounding areas
