OurDunbar

OurDunbar The place for offers, news & events from the Dunbar Trade community. Follow us to keep posted. Golf courses had been ploughed.

Established around 1948, Dunbar Trades’ Association (DTA), or Dunbar Traders as it was known then, was formed by individual traders, who on returning from the Second World War wanted to return Dunbar to its former glory. Beaches were dotted with sea defenses, rationing was still in place and fewer people had time for holidays. Through hard work and determination slowly but surely Dunbar was put ba

ck on the map as an A1 holiday destination and as a town of distinction with a vibrant economy. More than 60 years later, DTA continues working with the community and aims to promote a forward thinking business environment to take the town into a new phase of development. With over 50 members consisting of a wide variety of trades’ represented by farmers to gallery owners, professional advisers to tourist attractions. Being a member of the DTA provides a platform for your views to be voiced and initiatives pushed forward. It also adds strength to your business being part of a recognised association which works well with local government and other local bodies. For a membership fee of £60 you can be part of an association which continually works hard at promoting Dunbar and the local infra structure.

🚫 PARKING CHARGES! IS THE COST REALLY WORTH IT?

We’re being told these parking charges will deliver a saving of around £4,000 per year over 10 years.

But at what cost?

Because the reality is — it won’t take much for that “saving” to disappear.

If just one older person becomes more isolated…
If just one young person can’t afford to continue an apprenticeship on the High Street…
If just one local job becomes unviable because of added daily costs…

That £4,000 is gone.

And the wider cost?

Felt across our community.

Parking charges don’t just bring in money — they change behaviour.

They make it harder to:
• Get into town regularly
• Take part in community life
• Work locally, especially in lower-paid roles

This isn’t just about balancing a budget.

It’s about understanding the real cost of the decision.

Updated availability:

Some of the walking tours are full but there are still some spaces so book ahead if possible as last year we had to turn people away. The afternoon workshop for children still has a couple of spaces (ages 9+).

All the talks in the Town House are free to drop in (11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm - approx 50 mins), all are accessible. Pick up a drink from a local cafe, take a seat and learn about your local area.

The demonstrations are both inside and outside the Town House which also hosts an art exhibition linked to the old outdoor pool and there are regular volunteer led tours of this historic building (including the jail).

Drop by The Ridge and visit their new support centre and gardens, John Muir's Birthplace and The Legion (classic Dunbar films from 2 - 4pm). Visit the harbour area, there are also three food outlets open through the day.

See you tomorrow. https://ourdunbar.com/mc-events/dunbar-histories-day/

🚫 PARKING CHARGES! PROTECT WHOLE FAMILY SUPPORT IN DUNBAR

Dunbar is a great place to raise a family.

From parks and beaches to toddler groups and local activities — there’s so much here that brings families together.

But for many families, especially those with young children, getting around isn’t simple.

Buggies, bags, tired wee legs… sometimes the car isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity.

Parking charges, combined with strict time limits and the risk of fines, add pressure to something that should be easy.

What should be:
🌳 A trip to the park
👶 A toddler group
🌊 A walk on the beach

Becomes:
⏱️ Watching the clock
💸 Paying every time
⚠️ Worrying about overstaying

For families already juggling time, money and energy, this may be one barrier too many.

And when that happens, families don’t just rush — they stop going.

Less fresh air. Less connection. Less support.

That’s not strengthening families — that’s isolating them.

🚫 PARKING CHARGES! DON’T DEEPEN POVERTY IN DUNBAR

Reducing poverty is a national priority.

Supporting families, improving access, and reducing inequality are at the heart of government policy.

But real life matters.

For many people in our community, budgets are already stretched.

Every extra cost — no matter how small it may seem — adds up.

Parking charges don’t affect everyone equally.

Those with the least means will feel it most.

It could mean:
💸 Choosing not to come into town
👨‍👩‍👧 Cutting back on activities for children
🤝 Missing out on community groups and support
🛍️ Reducing visits to local shops and services

And with strict time limits and the risk of fines, the pressure only increases.

This isn’t just about parking.

It’s about access, fairness, and making sure no one is priced out of their own town.

Adding to our free walking tours and talks there will be a series of demonstrations taking place on the High Street during Histories Day. These show some of the traditional skills that keep our historic buildings wind and water tight as well as some decorative material uses. Alongside the beautiful "Pearl of Dunbar" these demonstrations will be set up outside the Town House and experts will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have.
